Rabbi Herman Rosenwasser Dies at Detroiter Wins Honors Folk Schools

YORK, N. Y. — Hon. Call Conference
Rabbi Herman Rosenwasser,
for 17 years the spiritual guide
of the Downtown Synagogue,
at 1205 Griswold, died May 17.
Funeral services were held
Sunday in Kaufman Chapel.
Burial was in San Francisco.
Surviving him are a daugh-
ter, Mrs. Louis Levin, of San
Francisco, and three sisters.
Born in Hungary, Rabbi
Rosenwasser was a graduate of
Hebrew Union College. He held
pulpits in the southwest before
coming to Detroit.
He took a deep interest in
..downtown Jewish - residents and
'endeared himself to thousands
of out-of-town guests, who,
:while at downtown hotels, were
able to participate in services
in the Downtown Synagogue,
•recite the kaddish on Yahr-
;zeits or attend Yizkor services
on holidays. He was a deep stu-
dent of Jewish 'mysticism.

Rabbi Rosenwasser was chap-
lain for many years at the La-
peer State Infirmary.
He had written many mono-
graphs and was at work on sev-
eral books, among them one on
the Statue of Liberty which his
friends hOpe to publish.
He was the author of a publi-
cation called "Zion, Kol Nidre
and the Kaddish," which he ded-
icated to the restoration of the
Holy Land in Israel.
He was 71 and resided at 59
Seward.

prior to their departure for New
York on June 9.

man of the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis, will extend greetings
for the organization, and num-
erous cantors from the com-
munity will chant liturgical
selections.
Rabbi Meisels, known as the
Sarvasher Rebe, settled with his
family in Detroit five years ago.
He established Cong. Khal
Oharedim here.
Isadore Sosnick is honorary
chaiiiiian of the affair, and Da-
vid J. Cohen is acting chairman.

Charter Day Dinner
A special committee has been
formed by the Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah to plan a Charter Day
Dinner on June 13 in Cong. Beth
Shmuel. A meeting of the com-
mittee is planned for 8:30 p.m.
Monday in the Yeshivah build-
ing.
Synagogues, organizations and
all interested groups are invited

which will pay tribute to the
institution with a student en-
rollment of 800.

Horace Stern, Chief Justice of
the Supreme Court of Penn-
sylvania, will be one of eight
outstanding spiritual and civic
leaders to receive honorary de-
grees at the 62nd annual com-
mencement exercises of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, on June 3, in the
Seminary Quadrangle, 3080
Broadway, New York, according
to Dr. Louis Finkelstein,
chancellor.
Justice Stern, who will re-
ceive the degree of Doctor of
Letters, honoris causal has been
a trustee of Dropsie College, the
University of Pennsylvania,
member of the Jewish Publica-
tion Society of America, and di-
rector of the Federation of Jew-
ish Charities of Philadelphia.
R.eceiving the honorary de-
grees, Doctor of Divinity, will
be seven rabbis: Herman Hail-
perin, of Pittsburgh; Benjamin
Lichter, of Pittsburgh; Abra-
ham M. Heller, of Brooklyn;
Joseph Miller, of Brooklyn;
Arthur Neulander, of Long Is-
land; Morris Schussiheim, of
Providence, R. I.; Morris Sil-
verman, of Hartford, Conn.
At the commencement, large
classes will be granted degrees
and certificates from the Semi-
nary's five schools, which ; in ad-
dition to the rabbinical school,
are the Teachers Institute-Semi-
nary College of Jewish Music
and the Seminary School of
Jewish Studies.
Dr. Max Arzt, vice-chancellor
of the Seminary, will give the
Commencement address, and
Rabbi 'Wolfe Kelman, executive
vice-president of the Rabbinical
Assembly' of America, will de-
liver the invocation.

Directors' Council to
Honor Walter Forbes
The Directors' Council of
Metropolitan Detroit will honor
Walter Farber, who is leaving
soon for Israel as a guest of
the Jewish Agency, at a fare-
well party and final meeting of
the season at 8 p.m, June 11, in
the home of Bernard Panush.
At the Council's last meeting,
an engraved plaque "in recog-
nition of meritorious and dili-
gent service" was given to Allen
A. Warsen, Council chairman
for the past two years.
Mrs. Matilda Rubin, of the
Jewish Center, spoke at the
meeting on plans for revision of
the annual Jewish Book Fair,
to be held again in November.

Mrs. Flayer Dies
Services were held Sunday
at the Ira Kaufman Chapel for
Mrs. Sophie Flayer, a Detroit
resident. for 60 years,,
passed away May 17 after a
short illness.
Born in Russia, Mrs. Flayer
had lived here most of her life.
She was a member of the Sis-
terhood of Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Surviving are two sons, David
and Abraham B.; a daughter,
Rena; a brother,•Julius Howard;
and a sister, Mrs. Celia KOnef-
sky.

Dr. Nissan Dies
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Dr.
Abraham Nissan, former Israel
Minister to the Scandinavian
countries, died May 19, after a
prolonged illness. He was 68.
A physician, Dr. Nissan had
served as an executive mem-
ber of the Jewish National
Council during the British ad-
ministration of Palestine and
was a member of the Provi-
sional State when Israel was
established. He was a member
of the Israel delegation at the
United Nations prior to taking
up the Scandinavian post in
1950. Dr. Nissan was buried in
Jerusalem. He was eulogized
by President Itzhak Ben Zvi
and Foreign Minister Moshe
Sharett.
