Adas Shalom Plaits 10th Anniversary Rabbinical Student
to Be Ordained June 2
Tribute to Rabbi Jacob E Segal
at Cincinnati School
A special evening of tribute
is planned by Adas Shalom
Synagogue in honor of Rabbi
Jacob E. Segal, who this sum-
mer will complete 10 years as
spiritual leader of the congre-
gation.
The program is scheduled
for 8 p. m. Tuesday, in the
main sanctuary, and will be
followed with a reception in
the social hall.
Participants will include
Charles H. Charlip, Adas Sha-
lom president; Mrs. George Liss
and Nicholas Lazar, pre.sidents
of the Sisterhood and Men's
Club; Irwin I. Cohn and Sid-
ney Shevitz.
Brief tributes also will be
forthcoming from the religious
school, adult study and youth
groups of the synagogue. Jo-
seph Katchke, chairman of the
anniversary tribute committee,
will preside. Rabbi Segal will
respond to the tributes.
Musical selections will be
rendered by Cantor Nicholas
Fenakel, the 1956 confirmation
e 1 a s s, accompanied by Mrs.
Bella Goldberg, and the Adas
Shalom Symphony Ensemble,
directed by Zinovi Bistritzky.
Rabbi Segal is the first 'spiri-
tual leader of Adas Shalom,
which under his leadership has
risen to a membership of over
1,000 families.
Since his arrival here, he has
won numerous commendations,
including a recent award from
the Detroit Round Table of
Christians and Jews for out-
standing service in behalf of
interfaith relations.
In 1955, the American Jew-
ish' Congress presented Rabbi
Segal with an Amity Award
citation for interfaith work ac-

Rabbi Segal graduated from
the Rabbinical School of the
Jewish Theological Seminary
in 1939, and after a brief ten-
ure as • a rabbi in Chicago, he
entered the U.S. Army Chap-
laincy Corps.
He worked with DP's in Ger-
many, France and Belgium, be-
fore being discharged with the
rank of major. He joined Adas
Shalom in the summer of 1946.
Rabbi Segal is the author of
"A Bialik Treasury," published
by the National Academy of
Adult Jewish Studies, and has
written two cantatas, one of
which, "In Freedom's Light,"
has been published nationally
by Bloch's of New York.
Among his many affiliations,
he is a member of the Rabbi-
nic Cabinet of the Jewish The-
ological Seminary.

Detroiter Sherwin T. Wine
will be ordained as a Reform
rabbi at ceremonies of the He-
brew Union College in Cincin-
nati on June 2.
The young rabbinical grad-
uate is the son of Mrs. William
Wine, of 2903 Elmhurst, and
the late Mr. Wine.
Only a few weeks ago he was
awarded a master of Hebrew
letters degree, to go with a
bachelor's of Hebrew letters de-
gree he received earlier at the
college.
He also -holds a bachelors de-
gree in philosophy and a mast-
ers degree in political science
from the University of Michi-
gan, where he was a scholarship
student and a member of Phi
Beta Kappa honor society.
Throughout his student days
at Central High School, Wine
won a number of awards and
honors, chief among which was
first place nationally in the
Hearst History Award in 1946.
He was •an honor student at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, which he
attended from kindergarten
through high school. He is a
former staff member of The
Jewish News.
While a student at Hebrew
Union College, Wine served as
spiritual leader of three dif-
ferent congregations, and is now
acting in this capacity at Park-
ersburg, W. Va.
Mrs. Wine will go to Parkers-
burg this weekend at the in-
vitation of the congregation t o
watch her son conduct confirma-
