Pioneer Women Set $50 000 Goal
For 25th Annual Donor Sunday

DR. EDWARD N. EHRLICH,
son of Dr. and Mrs. Adolph Ehr-
lich, of 24070 Rensselaer, Oak
Park, is one of two doctors in
the widely-publicized expedi-
tion, "Operation Deepfreeze,"
which left Nov. 14 for the South
Pole. Dr. Ehrlich is a graduate
of the University of Michigan
Medical School. He was an in-
tern and resident physician at
Wayne County General' Hospital,
until -joining the Navy in 1953.
He volunteered for the expedi-
tion last spring. .

'The Detroit Council of Pioneer

Women has set a $50,000 g oal for
its 25th annual donor event, to
be held at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, at
Masonic Temple.
Funds raised will be used, in
Israel, for the rehabilitation of
new inUnigrants and aid • to or-
phan children, homeless girls and
working mothers.
In Kanot, Israel, now under
construction is a completely-
modern agricultural school being
provided by Pioneer Women to
offer a four-year high school
course- for teen-agers.
Sunday's program will feature
Max Freedman, Washington cor-
respondent of the • Manchester
- Guardian, as guest speaker. -
Comedian Lou Mason will be
principal entertainer, featuring a
one-man show of Jewish humor.
Supporting him will be Viennese
soprano Martha Schlamrne and
guitar-singing Mira Gilbert, who
will offer a folk ballad of the 30-
r year history of Pioneer Women
i in this country.

Invest in Israel on

A drive . for sports -equipment
and toys for Israel has been
launched by the Detroit Women's
Division, American Jewish Con-
gress, for which Mrs. Louis Alper
will serve as chairman.
Participating in the campaign
are students in 14 area - Sunday
schools; who will share their
Hanukah toys and gifts with
youngsters in the Jewish state.
All - materials collected will be
sent to be used at Israel play-
grounds and recreational centers.
It will be delivered through
Sports for Israel, an agency which
manages the shipping.
A sp-ecial request for 2,000 balls
has been issued by the local Con-
gress women. Also sought are
indoor games, such as ches's and
checkers.
Working with Mrs. Alper are
Mesdames Walter Berlow, Dor-
othy Fink, D. Garfield, Joseph
Greenberg and Jack Topor, chap-
ter community relations chair-
men. Information on the drive,
which continues through -Dec. 18,
may be obtained by calling Mrs.

travel to the Soviet Union, Po-
land, Czechoslovakia,. Hungary
and Romania, applications are
being accepted by the Israel
Tourist Service for visits to
Russia.
Jules Doneson, director of the
travel agency, said that although
applications to other Iron Cur-
tain countries are not being ac-
cepted, organized groups of four
or more people to Russia are be-
ing taken.
Tourist visas for the specific
number of days planned_ in vis-
iting are issued by the Soviet
Embassy in Washington. Escorted
tours run from five to 14 days.

An exhibition of woodcuts by
former Detroiter, Dr. Arthur C.
Danto, was recently on display
at New York's Gallery 62, lo-
cated at 62 W. 56th St.
In the art column of The New
York Times, Dr. Danto is refer-
red to as "an artist who special-
izes in studies of children, carry-
ing characteristics of them to -
emotional degrees. But they are
never sentimental. The moods of
happiness or sadness that they
reflect so graphically are genu- 10
, 4
inely and freshly felt, and the
artist exploits broken line and
dark areas to knowing effects."
Dr. Danto, a professor of phil-
osophy at Columbia University,
received his bachelor's degree at
Wayne and his MA and PhD
from Columbia. He also studied
art in New York and Paris.
Married to Shirley Rovetch,
also a Detroiter, Dr. Danto is the
father of a daughter, Elizabeth.
His parents are Dr. and Mrs.
Samuel B. Danto, of HUntington
Woods.

Dr. Raphael Altman was re-
elected president of Knollwood
Country Club at a meeting of the
club's board of directors, Sunday.
Other officers elected include
Joseph Gendelman, vice-presi-
dent; Louis H. Luckoff, treasurer;
Bernard Siegel, secretary, David
Miro, assistant treasurer, • and
Sam Kane, assistant secretary.
New board members. are Sol
Eisenberg, Harry Jaffa and Dr.
George Weiss. Re - elected to
three-year terms were Harold H.
Gilbert, Louis H. Schostak and
Siegel.
At the meeting, George Kays,
chairman of the Knollwood golf
committee, announced that. Pete
Cooper would be retained as club

Dr. Moses Zalesky will speak
on "New Melodies in Hebrew
Poetr-ST" at a meeting of the
Kvutzah Ivrith at 3 p.m., Sun-
day, in the Rose Sittig Cohen
Bldg. Norman Ruttenberg is
chairman of the program. The
public is invited to attend.
The same evening Dr. Zalesky
will speak on the "Hebrew
Language and You" in English at
the Book Fair program at the
Davison Community Center.
