Beth Shalom Leaders Break Ground

Make It

JAC K 'S

By the Oak-Woodser

_ Living in the suburbs weekly
gets more inspiring to the Jew.
In the past few weeks alone,
we've witnessed ground-breaking
ceremonies for Cong. Bnai David,
cornerstone ceremonies for Cong.
Emanu-El, the beginning of sab-
bath services at Clinton School
by Cong. Bnai Moshe.
Last Sunday, at ground-break-
ing ceremonies for Cong. Beth
Shalom, a large group of congre-
gants gathered at the site of their
proposed synagogue, on Lincoln
Rd., across • from the Tyler
School.
The Keynote of the program
was sounded bS, Beth Shalom's
spiritual leader, Rabbi Mordecai
S. Halpern, w-ho told the crowd
who had gathered on a raw and
windy aft ernoon that - "the
warmth of the occasion shall keep
us warm."
In terms of the average age of
its membership, Beth Shalom is
undoubtedly the youngest con-
gregation ever to undertake to
build.a synagogue in this area.

What they lack in individual
resources" is balanced with a
fine spirit that proudly an-
- nounces:- "We are Jews; we, as
Jews, desire a place -to worship;
we will build a synagogue for
ourselves and our children."

Formed a little over three years
ago by a handful of newcomers to'
Oak Park and Huntington Woods,
the congregaton was first known
as the Oak Park Synagogue. Its
membership has grown to nearly
300 families.
Ground-breaking Sunday was
at the site of the first section to
be constructed — an all-purpose
unit which will serve as a sanc-
tuary seating 700, or a social hall.
Offices and kitchens will be in-
cluded.
The initial Wing - will cost an
estimated $140,000. Plans call for
the addition at a later date of a
sanctuary and - classrooms for the
religious •school and Hebrew
school.
Rabbi Morris Adler, of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, gave the major
address at the ground-breaking.
He said that Jews, once recog-
nized in totality as a community,
