Goedhart has expressed his "ex-
treme concern" over the financial
situation of the UN Refugee Fund
Although seven months of the
D
year had already expired, less
than 50 percent of the 1955 gov-
ernmental target of $4,200,000
had been "paid, pledged or prom-
D
ised" and, said the High Com-
missioner, there was "not much
of an outlook that the target
would be reached."

to the UNREF target, the High

and that UNREF was therefore
still $2,216,000 short of .the 1955
target.

report, that if it had any advice
to give him as to how to achieve
the UNREF target by the end of 0
1955, he would be eternally
grateful.
The High Commissioner found
that his major worries over
UNREF were financial, and he
said that his difficulties were
being increased by the tendency •

ing funds whereby a govern- •

ment's contribution would vary
according to the total contribu-
tions of other governments. "By
these strings," the High Com-
missioner said, "you freeze the
readiness of governments to come
forward with funds."
The High Commissioner re-
ported that the overall problem
in Europe concerned some 300,-
000 unsettled refugees. In par-

ticular there were large numbers
of refugees still in camps—"those

ghastly places which everyone
should see."
The camp population at the
present time was Germany
27,000, Austria 36,000, Italy, in-
cluding Trieste, 4,800 and Greece
2,500 making a total of 71,500.
To the number of refugees living
in official camps had to be added
30,000- to 50,000 refugees living
in unofficial camps.

of the refugee camp population
able to migrate.

E. G. Robinson's Photo
Edward G. Robinson was glanc-
ing through a batch of publicity
photographs that had just ar-
rived from the studio. "Brother!
These are the worst pictures I
ever saw of me!" He motioned
for his wife to examine the
prints. "Dear, just look at my
expression! I look like an ape!"
Robinson's wife lifted an eye-
brow and murmured, "You
should've thought of that before
you had them taken."

Israeli Seaman Tours World,
Boat Displays Israel Flag
An
Israeli merchant seaman docked
in Washington for a short rest
from his around-the-world good-
will tour in his 23-foot boat,
Lamerhak II. Joseph Havkins
says the purpose of his tour is to
"Show the Israel Flag at Places
where it hasn't been seen before."
The seaman crossed the Atlan-
tic last year in 82 days, arriving
in Puerto Rico from Seville,
Spain on May 20. From Puerto
Rico he traveled to New York in
37 days during the thick of a
hurricane.
He will continue his world-
wide trek by way of the Panama
Canal across the Pacific Ocean to
Melbourne, Australia. From there
he intends to sail for India by
way of New Guinea, Bali and
Burma. He will also touch South
Africa, cross the Atlantic again to
South America and return to the
United States before going home
to Israel.
