In the summer of 1954, th,
author and her husband were
enrolled in a University Work
shop in Israel where the r
studied the life and culture o
the cradle of the three great re
ligions of the world. After thei
arrival in• Beit Berl, Ruth Gold .
berg lived, ate and learned Is i .-
rael. She did so not as a touris
or sightseer, but as a trainee
and seasoned reporter in search t
of firsthand knowledge.

The author's observations o r
the problem of minorities, th
political party set-up, the news
papers, geography, industry, cul .
ture, and education give us
rare insight into the develop
ment and growth of this strug :
gling, but gallant, little democ .
racy. The book also lays bar e
the political, social and eco
nomic problems of great con
cern within the country.
Her trips "from Dan to Beer
sheba" brought her into direc
contact with Israeli men an
'
women in all walks of lif e
Among the places she visite
were Tel Aviv, the center of th
arts; Jerusalem, the capital, an d
the holy Nazareth; Beersheba;
Haifa, the chief port and indus-
trial center; and several village s
and communes (kibbutzim an
moshavim). Her intimate con -
versations everywhere with Is-
raelis, from such greats as Ben-
Gurion and his striking wif !
Paula, to the taxi-drivers, la-
borers, white-collar workers an
professionals, make for interest-
ing and unforgettable slices of
life.
After. 15 years with Passaic
(N.J.) Daily Herald in every ca-
pacity, from advertising copy-
writer to police reporter to city
editor, Ruth Goldberg joined a
Trenton (N.J.) advertising agen-
cy in an executive capacity. She
subsequently formed her own
business, dealing: in antiques and
estate settlements which she op-
erated successfully until 1948,
whereupon ,she liquidated the
firm to return to lecturing and
writing.
Born in New Jersey, - she is a
graduate of Newark State Col-
lege and Columbia University.
A. resident of Clifton for 20
years, she and her husband, a
retired high school principal,
now make their home in Nutley,-
N.J. Mrs. Goldberg is a member
of the American Association of
University Women and the Nut-
ley Historical Society, and in
1946 was elected to honorary
membership in the Clifton, N.J.,
Congregation, the only woman
ever to have achieved such dis-
tinction.

Story from Midrash

The Midrash tells a story of a
Greek visitor to Jerusalem who
gave a little boy a penny and
said: "Go and buy me some-
thing that I can eat, be satis-
fied with, and yet have enough
left to take on a journey." This
seemed a difficult task, but the
little boy was not daunted. He
went to a shop and bought a
pennyworth of salt, which he of-
fered to the Greek, saying: "Will
this do?" The Greek had to ad-
mit that he had met. his match.
