commemorative post card and special postage stamp which the
State of Israel issued honoring the 20th anniversary of the death
of Baron Edmond De Rothschild. A large gathering of Israeli
officials, including President Ben Zvi, assembled in special cere-
monies at Zikhron and paid tribute to the great Jewish philan-
thropist who did so much in helping lay the foundation of the
Jewish State. • The event took place on the hilltop of Ramat
Hanadiv, named in the Baron's honor.

To Our Many Friends

Origin of Word 'God'

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1954, Jewish Telegraphic)
Agency, Inc.)

There is no universal agree-
ment on the derivation and ori-
gin of the world "god." Some
would like to derive it from the
word good, in which sense the
notion of the divine would be a
source of good. This, however, is
generally discredited by ranking
authorities. Some claim that it
may be related to an ancient
Lithuanian word which referred
to one who practiced magic.
Others attempt to trace the
word "god" to the Aryan term
"ghut" which comes from "ghut-
to" which means to "implore."
The allusion of the latter deri-
vation would be that the word
"god" signifies the one whom
we implore in asking for our
wants, etc.
