"Shalom."
Then, came the staccato of
gunfire, and the strangers beat
a hasty retreat, leaving two
guards dead in-...their wake.
This is one of the incidents,
to which the May issue of Man's
Life magazine calls attention in
reporting the obstacles facing
Israel in its attempt s - to
strengthen its statehood.
In the article "Slaughter in
the Desert," B. W. von Block
compares the Arab marauders to
Indians on the warpath in the
days of our own early West, and
asserts that the Moslem coali-
tion is similar in many respects
to the alliance of Indian na-
tions, who refused to accept the
armistice ending the Indian
wars.
The story is a compliment to
Israel's achievements despite
these handicaps and a special
tribute to the people who guard
its borders in scattered settle-
ments .

Israel Labor Ministry
.Staff Member Acclaims
Military Service Value

Miss Rachel Katz of. Herzlia,

Israel, a Sabra (native) the
Jewish state, is in Detroit on a
brief visit with her uncle and
aunt, Mr. and Mrs. William
Stein. She plans to be in this
country two months, part of the
time to be spent with relatives
in New York.
A member of the Minstry of
Labor staff, under Golda Myer-
Son, Israel Minister of Labor,
Miss Katz said she Considered
her two years' service in the Is-
rael army as of great personal
value. She stated- that Mrs.
Myerson and her staff have
gone to extremes to make it
possible for girls 'with religious
scruples to do work other than
military. Kosher food, strict ob-
servance of the Sabbath and the
utmost consideration. for their
religious feelings are assured to
girls from religious homes, Miss
Katz said. "Only the extreme

Klein. Explains How to Close Store
On Sabbath and Still Make a Profit

Much of the success Stephen
Klein, president of Barton's
Bonbonniere, has achieved as a
sabbath-observant businessman,
he attributes to a fashionable I
ladies' apparel shop, called S.
Weinreb's, in his native Vienna.
As a boy, Klein would pass the
shop, "a little ashamed of my
outgrown jacket and hand-me-
down shoes," watching the rich
shoppers handed out of their '
carriages by uniformed doormen.
With a clientele mainly of
wealthy gentiles, S. Weinreb's
closed on the sabbath and all
Jewish holidays, and each day
as he passed Klein made him-
self the same promise: "Some
day I shall have an elegant shop
with gay lights and beautiful
windows, and every Friday be-
fore sundown I, too, will close
my shop doors as the laws of
my forefathers dictate."
In 1940, Klein opened his first
chocolate shop in New York, and
that first Friday, he said, "I
sent my two employees away be-
fore sundown and with deep
satisfaction, I locked . the door
of my store and went home to
welcome the sabbath, at peace
with God and myself. Now, 13
years later, I still get the same
feeling of satisfaction when the
59 Barton stores close their
doors at sundown Friday to re-
main closed until 'Saturday eve-
ning."
Klein claims today it is re-
latively simple, with present
shopping habits changed to
avoid Sattarday shopping, to ob-
serve the sabbath and still make
profits. The shift to suburban
areas, he claims, has placed
