Plans Unique Tours of Israel
Shirley Kofender Wed
To Richard Rosenthal
By BEN NISON
A young American Rabbi has
resigned a key position in Jew-
ish organizational work to un-
dertake a new approach to
boosting American tours to Is-
rael on the theme of Israel as
the Land of the Bible rather
than as a modern industrialized
state.
Rabbi Meyer Passow, since
September, 1952, executive di-
rector of the Synagogue Council
of America, has been appointed
general manager of the Israel
Tourist Service, Inc. He is in
charge of all operations in the
United States and Israel, and
an office to be opened soon in
London.
He said he
hopes to boost
travel by Chris-
tians in Israel
to a 50-50 level
with Jewish vis-
itors as against
a present ratio
of perhaps 10
to 90.
An annual at--
traction for Rabbi Passow
Christian visitor s on which
plans now are being developed
is a Biblical village, with the
aid of both Jewish and , non-
Jewish Biblical authorities; on a
suitable site in Israel.
The projected village, Rabbi
Passow said, will faithfully
model the customs,- clothes and
activities of a typical commun-
ity of the Biblical period, using
Israelis Who will live precisely
as the ancient Israelites did.
Rabbi Passow will leave for
Israel in March to study offices
and field operations-- from ITS
headquarters in Tel Aviv and

Can't Live With
Woman or Without
Credit Leonard Lyons, New
York Post columnist, for this
tale about Herman Wouk's ex-
perience with that whirlwind
called Hollywood:
"When Wouk went to Holly-
wood to prepare a screen treat-
ment of his "Caine Mutiny,"
producer Stanley Kramer told
him: 'As I see it, this is a love
story between a man and his
ship. We don't need a girl in it.
She'd be superfluous.' •
"Wouk dissented, saying he
put a girl into his novel so that
female readers could have a peg
on which to identify themselves
with the story. Kramer over-
ruled him. Wouk wrote the
treatment and left.
"A year later, the author re-
ceived a call from Stanley Rob-
erts, who was writing the screen
play. 'We've changed your
treatment,' he said, 'We put a
girl into it. I hope you don't
mind. But Kramer said we'd need
a girl, so that women can iden-
tify themselves with the story°."
