ISt Century Arrives Early for Greek Firms Start Oil Willing Operations in
Dead Sea Area
NEW YORK,

Immigrants with Assist from HIAS

Greek-born Ernst Marbach, 52, who after 15 years of wander-
ing was told that he and his family could not receive U.S. immi-
gration visas until sometime in the 21st Century (Greek quotas are
oversubscribed until then), is shown on his arrival at the shelter
of !HAS, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. With him are his Aus-
trian-born wife, Maria, and their two children, Felicity, 9, and
Henry, 6. HIAS officials were able to convince U.S. authorities
that the family should be admitted under Mrs. Marbach's Austrian
quota rights. Marbach fled to the Orient when the Nazis enterel
Vienna, and married his wife in Shanghai where both children
were born. Then, in 1948, the Marbachs fled from Shanghai when
Chinese Red troops approached the city. The case of allowing
the Marbachs to enter the U.S. was taken 'up by HIAS, which has
fought it for five years, until final approval was won.

(JTA)—Seven oil
companies from the U.S., Can-
ada, Panama and Israel will
start drilling operations near
the Dead Sea and in other sec

by the Jewish Agency's economic
department here.
The seven companies are: The
Husky Oil Company, of Cody,
Wyoming; The New Continental
Oil Company, of Calgary, Can-

Exploration Co., Ltd., and Israel
Oil Prospectors, Ltd., all register-
ed in Israel.
The latter three companies
hold joint licenses in the Dead
Sea area, and plan to start drill-
ing immediately. L a p i d o t h,
which will conduct operations
for all three, has made a con-
tract with Kerr-McGee . Oil In-
dustries, Inc., of Oklahoma City,
to be Lapidoth's exclusive oil-
drilling cotractor. A field camp
is being set up near Sdom, at the
southern end of the Dead Sea.
The Husky Oil Company is
now carrying out geological and
geophysical exploration in the
coastal region of Israel, and has
obtained the -services of the
Weizmann Institute of Science
at Rehovoth for gravity work in
that area. -
The Weizmann Institute is

also making geological surveys
in the Negev in behalf of The
'Continental Oil Company. A
team of the Institute's experts,
headed by Prof. C. L. Pekeris,
has been active since July 1 and
is expected to complete its work
by the end of next month.
The two Panamanian compan-
ies, founded by independent oil

men headed by William F. Buck-
ley of New York, are now en-
gaged in field work to determine
the best drilling locations in
areas for which they hold licen-
ses.

The great Trumpet is hounded!
The New Year dawns with promises replete
With vows of sacrifice and fulfillment,
With self-effacement for the goal to be attained.
Sound ye trumpets, thrill ye horns
From one end of the earth unto the other.

-

T'kiah, t'ruah, Sh'varim!
Awake ye tents of the dispersed
There is a guerdon to be gained!
Lo, it is 'a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob.
Sound ye trumpets for an end. of hatred,
For the fullness of Peace and Justice
To all the denizens of the earth, Amen.
