Causeless Hatred
The First Temple fell because
of the sins of idolatry, immor-
ality and bloodshed. The sec-
ond Temple, despite the fact
that the Torah was studied and
good deeds performed in its day,
fell on account of causeless
hatred (sinath chinom). This
teaches that causeless hatred is
as grievous a sin as idolatry.
