WASHINGTON—The complex-
ion of the new Iranian regime
of Gen. Fazollah Zahedi is be-
ing observed by interests anxious
to know if the precarious cir-
cumstances of Persian Jewry will
be adversely affected. Fear has
been indicated in some quarter3
that Premier Zahedi may call
into his government the fa-
natical Mosl em religious ele-
ments. which demand action
against Jews and Israel.
A leading role in the coup
against Mossadegh was taken by
Ayatullah Kashani, an extrem
ist religious leader who emerged
as a supporter of Zahedi and
the Shah. Kashani, like the new
Premier, actively, cooperated with
the Nazis in a frustrated plot
to aid a German offensive
against the Persian oilfields
But Kashani's extremism did
not end with the defeat of Ger-
many.
During the Palestine dispute
he incited anti-Jewish pas-
sions among the Iranian peo-
ple and was the only import-
ant Iranian leader to demand
armed action in cooperation
with the Arab League against
Israel. Kashani's influence in
the new government therefore
will not likely be used toward
the end of inter-faith amity
The real dahger is that Za-
hedi, in his enthusiasm to strike
at Iran's Communist Party and
left-wing influences, may un-
leash Fascism. The Jewish Cul .-
tural and Social Association of
Iran not long ago addressed a
petition to the authorities ask-
ing that a stop be put to anti-
Semitic agitation by Fascist or-
ganizations. Incitement against
Iranian. Jewry is centered in the
"National Socialist Party" foun-
ded hlo 1952.
The leader of this group - is
Davoud Monchi Zadeh, who
spent 20 years in Germany and
adopted Hitler's ideology. An-
other' dangerous organization is
the "Pdn Iranian Party," which
has a Fascist approach and h.
"Greater Iran" program for ex-
panding Iranian frontiers.
These movements are in ac-
cord with Fascist principles,
both anti-democratic and ant,-
Communist. The Pan Iranians
in particular are active in corn
batting the Communist Tudeli
Party. There have been fre-
quent clashes between the Pan
Iranians and persons they ac-
cused of being Communists.
The fathe r of the present
Shah planned to turn Iran into
a Nazi base to help Hitler's
forces driving through the Cau-
casus toward Iran. This plot
was frustrated by Anglo-Soviet
military intervention. Infor-
mation later reached the British
that Zahedi intended aiding the
Nazis in a projected airborne
attack on the Allies.
Iran's Jewish population is es.-
timated to number about, 80,000.
