E
Et
By Uncle David
might be, her mother. had to
call her at least twice to get her
home for supper.
But, there was one day when
Hannah . wasn't out playing with
the other children—when her
appetite was gone ' completely.
And on this day, Hannah was
no different than her mother or
her father or her brother,
Daniel. -
In Hannah's house there was
always gaiety, but on this day nc
one was happy. And it had all
happened when that man in the
uniform had rung the bell, and
had brought a telegram, and
Hannah had found out that her
older brother was missing with
some other soldiers in Korea
where he was fighting for our
country.
That day was just before. the
eve of Rosh Hashanah. And
that night Hannah and Daniel
stayed at home with their
grandmother and they, too,
prayed for their brother's safe
return.
And while Hannah sat in her
bed, with her head down she -
prayed. She kept saying over
and over again: "Please, dear,
God, bring Leo home to me."
And her mind skipped to the
great holy day of Rosh Hash-
anah, and she remembered
writing in 'chalk upon the
blackboard "L'Shono Tovo Tiko
sevu"—a happy New Year. But
how could this be a happy New
Year for her when her brother
was . in some far off land, and
nobobdy knew whether he was
alive or not !
Then, the moon, which shined
bright outside her window,
seemed to stop and hang there
very still, and all at once a
voice called out from far away,
"Don't worry, little Hannah, all
is well."
The next thing Hannah knew
the moon had disappeared, but
could not forget the voice which
said, "Don't worry little Hannah,
all is well."
When her mother and father
came home from the synagogue,
Hannah rushed to tell them
what she had heard when for
that time the moon had stood
still. And her parents patted
her head, and told her to go to
sleep. But - nobody slept well
that night.
In . the early hours of th0
morning when the sun began to
rise, and the last signs of night
disappeared, everybody in the
house was started by the ring-
ing of the front door bell. And
the next thing Hannah knew
the house was more cheerful
than it had ever been before,
and everybody was hugging and
kissing everybody else. Leo was
safe!
And Hannah's mother and
father had come over to her,
and once again they patted her
on the head. Only this time
they smiled and said "Your
prayers were answered." And
they asked' Hannah and Daniel
to come to the synagogue with
them. And on that. daY, Han-
nah's' first visit to the syna-
gogue, never had the Shofar
been blown with so much mean-
ing, with' so much strangth and
with so much hope.
Dear Boys and Girls,
Have you ever thought of how
important it: is to offer your
Prayer to . God? As we approach
one of our most important Holy
Day—Rosh Hashanah—we re-
alize 'more than usual what
Prayer reallY • means.
I have a story to tell- you
about a little girl, only six-
years-old, and her name is Han-
nah. The story is about Han-
nah's first visit to the syna-
gogue on this ,very significant
Holy Day of Rosh Hashanah,
which is of course the Jewish
New Year.
Hannah was as normal a six-
year-old as you could expect to
find anywhere at all. She liked
to eat and when she did she had
the aPpetite of a bear—and not
a teddy bear, either:. She also
liked to play, and hungry as she
