Local Circle Branches
Back Cancer Project

Detroit's Workmen's Circle
branches have joined in the
group's national campaign to
raise $100,000 for the building
of a cancer wing at the City of
Hope, non-sectarian tuberculosis
and cancer sanitorium at Duarte,
Calif.
The wing will be erected in
memory of Joseph Baskin, late
secretary of the Circle, who, in
1952, died of cancer.
A games party, sponsored by
Detroit Branch 460, will be held
at 9 p.m., today, at the home
of Nathan Levitts, 16225 North-
lawn, to inaugurate the local
group's drive in behalf of the
venture.

THE FOLKS at Woodhull. Lake
are mighty proud when Friday
nights roll around . . They
gather in back of Esther Bic011's
cottage and watch her and
Sammy Woolf put on a show of
talent among the youngsters
and parents . .. plus contribut-
ing to the Mizrachi Child Rescue
Fund . . of which Esther is an
ardent member . • . The Wood-
hull cottagers really enjoy the
weekly festivities and are happy
in the thought that their contri-
bution is going for so worthy a
cause.

LIL LEBEAUX tells the story
of the meeting of a CP unit
presided over by a female chair-
than . . . One of the members
spoke up with a "Madam Chair-
man, I would life to be excused
early to go to the opera." . .
The chairman fixed him with a
stony glare, and .proceeded to
lecture the abashed member
on the proper terminology in
party circles, making great em-
phasis of the fact that 'madam"
was a bourgeouise and outmoded
term, and that the proper form
of address was "comrade." . . .
Concluding her tirade, she then
asked the now thoroughly hum-
iliated member what opera he
wanted to see . . . "Comrade
Butterfly," meekly replied the
chastened one.
