Tribute will be paid to Max
Gordon, one of the most dis-

on June 16, honoring him for
over a third of a century's serv-

The 'occasion is the annual
meeting and testimonial dinner

The dinner, to
be held at Beth

by Mandell Berman and Jacob

Mr. Gordo n, who presently
teaches in the High School and

schools since it was established
in 1919. Born in Vilna, Mr. Gor-

in the local Heder and yeshi-

in the Russian "gimnazyah."

States, he was admitted to Coop-

where he studied civil engineer-

Hebrew in the then famous Up-

Following study at Cooper
Union for a few years, Gordon
decided to devote all his time to
studying Hebrew and literature.
By 1913 his reputation as a He-
brew scholar was established,
and he was invited to teach un-
der Louis Hurwich in Indian-
apolis, Ind.
Six, years later he came to
Detroit where he began com-
piling an outstanding record.
Since 1937, Mr. Gordon, in addi-
tion to his school duties, lectures
a Saturday afternoon class at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek on aspects
of Judaism.
An accomplished author and
grammarian, Mr. Gordon has
prepared several elaborate man-

Despite • Sunday's downpour,
ceremonies launching the cam-
paign by Congregation Beth
Abraham for funds to build its
new synagogue got off to an
enthusiastic start.
Hundreds came to see Mayor/
Richard W. Marshall of Oak
Park cut the ribbon and turn
the key in the door of the hand-
some n e w "Homestead," the
$25,000 home at the corner of
Marlowe and 9 Mile Road.
Louis Ellenbogen, president of
the congregation, headed t h e
dignitaries of Beth Abraham.
Mrs. Nathan Kaufman, presi-
dent of the Women's Club; Mrs.
Ellenbogen, president of Sister-
hood, and chairman Max E.
E. Klayman of the drive, pre-
sided.
The decorating staff of Fen-
ster and Co., which is respon-
sible for the handsome appoint-
ments of the "Homestead,"
chose modern. Carpeting is wall
to wall. The drapes are rich.
Says chairman Ed Rice, of
the campaign publicity, "Ticket
sales were gratifying. Beth
Abraham can look to the `Home
stead' for a substantial con-
tribution towards the building
fund for the new synagogue."

TOWBER

of the Dexter Theater in con-
nection with his latest film,
"The Jewish' Melody."
He will appear tonight, and
at Saturday and Sunday mat-
inee and evening performances.
The film features 14 songs
with lyrics by Towber and music
by composer Sholem Secunda.
The movie has English subtitles.
Towber has written the lyrics
for "I Love You To6 Much," in
Yiddish, "Ich Hob Dich Zufil
Lieb." His "Shein. Vie Die Lev-
onoh" ("Like the Moon Above
You") is featured in the film.
Also in the cast are Isidor
Casher, Seymour Richtzeit, La-
zar Freed, and Yetta. Zwerdling,
the famous comedienne who
played opposite Menasha Skul-
nik for many years. -
Towber chooses for his pro-
grams themes that are familiar
in American Jewish life.
Reporting on experiences he
gathered during appearances
in ,England, France, Belgium,
Holland and Switzerland, he
said that Jewish audiences are
alike everywhere. But, he said,
as in this country, he must ad-
mit that Yiddish is a disappear-
ing art—that Jews everywhere
cling to the language of the
lands of their residence.
He sees evidence of Hebrew
assuming a place in Jewish life
next to the languages of resi-
dence for Jews.
