nounces. William Hordes, Detroit
JNF president.
The appointment of Kaplan
14 in line with the JNF program
for cordinating all JNF activi-
ties, and expanding its scope to
include all landsmanshaften and
other orgnizations.
From 1944 to 1947, Kaplan
worked in the Jewish Federation
and Combined Jewish Appeal of
. Chicago. From 1947 to 1950, he
was regional director of the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
He also Worked on the public re-
lations staff of the Chicago
Medical School.
His last position before corn-
ing here was with Chicago's
State of Israel Bond office.
Born in Winnipeg, Canada, he
moved to Toronto in 1934 and
remained there until his Chi-
cago appointment. From 1928-30
he was executive secretary of
the Zionist Organization of
Western Canada. Then for three
years he worked on Winnipeg's
Jewish Post, later working on
The Jewish Standard, 1934-36,
and after that as editor of the
English page of the Toronto
Daily Hebrew Journal.
He is married to former De-
troiter Sarah Drasnin and has
two children.

To Get 'Semicha' Mar. 8

Rabbi Henry Hoschander of
Cong. Bnai Israel; Pontiac, will
be among the 100 rabbis who
will receive the highest degree
in Jewish theological learning,
"Semicha", which will be con-
ferred • by Yeshivah University's
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theologi-
cal Seminary at a convocation
Sunday, March 8, at the Uni-
versity, Amsterdam and 186th,
New York, it was announced
here by Dr. Samuel Belkin,
president:
Born in Germany, Rabbi
Hoschander was educated at
Yeshiva University, receiving
his Bachelor of Arts' degree
from the University's College of
Arts and Sciences, and Master
of Arts degree from the Uni-
versity of Massachusetts. He
formerly held a pulpit with
Cong. Bnai Israel in North-
hampton, Mass.

Honoring Jewish Music
Month, students in all branches
of the United Hebrew Schools
and their parents will assemble
in the • auditorium of the Beth
Aaron Synagogue at 3 a.m.,
March 8. •
The afternoon will be dedi-
cated to Israeli music and
dance. The program will con-
sist of choral singing by the
children's choir, presentation of
student soloists and a medley of
songs by the Teachers Quartet.
In addition to students, Avrom
Rosenthal, flutist, will play Is-
raeli shepherd songs; Manfred
Vogel,., violinist, play ex- .
cerpts from the Baal Shem by
Bloch and the Wayne Univer-
sity student dance group will
present Israeli dances.
Admittance will be by ticket
only. Tickets will be distributed
to school children. Others wish-
ing to attend call TO. 8-0063.

Purim. Celebration

A special program of enter-
tainment has been prepared by
members of the Music Study
Club for a Purim presentation
on Sunday for residents of the
Home for Aged.
Under the direction of Mrs.
Henry Weinberg, the program
will include Cantor Wendel
Stawis, of Cong. Ahavas Achim.
Residents of the Home are cur-
rently making , masks for the
celebration.
Another event at the Home
will• be a program on March 12,
at which Sammy Woolf and his
Orchestra and Max Sosin will
entertain. Master of ceremonies .
will be a member of the Home.
Readers during the month
will include Mrs. Sarah Fried-
man and Israel Elpern, of the
United Hebrew School s, and
Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter who
will speak later in the month
on Passover.

Honor Grandchildren

The sixth rn'laveh malkeh of
the Midrasha will be held at
8:45 p.m., Saturday, in the audi-
torium of the Rose Sittig Cohen
Bldg.
The program will begin with
the traditional reading of the
Megillah, and a special Purim
kiddush will be chanted. Hu-
morous skits will be presented
by the Midrasha students.
Community singing Israeli
dances and games will follow.
The public is invited.

Honored by Bey of Tunis.
PARIS, (JTA) — Louis. D. Hor-
witz, representative of the Joint
Distribution Committee in Tun-
isia, was decorated by the Bey
of Tunis with the Order pf Vic-
tory in recognition for the re-
lief work he conducted for the
Jews in Tunisia since 1949 •

• C. Douglas Dillon, Eisenhower's nominee as Ambassador to
Fiance, is of Jewish descent. His grandfather was a, Polish Jew
who for many years visited his parents' grave at Lodz . . . We
wholly agree with the. ban imposed by the Archbishop of Boston
against the singing of "Here Comes the Bride" at wedding cere-
monies—but for another reason. Its author -, Richard Wagner .
was a Jew hater of classic German style and by the same token
one of Hitler's favorite composers. It is disgraceful to hear that
song at Jewish weddings, 'symbol of Jewish continuity and sur-
vival. The way to stop it is for rabbis to refuse to officiate. I
would like to see a courageous rabbi make a move in that direc-
tion . .. The story of the two. Jewish orphans who were abducted
from a Catholic orphanage in France when they were ordered
returned to their relatives in Israel will lead to the doors of an
international Jewish gang of meshumodim specializing in bap-
tizing war-orphaned Jewish children at a good price. One of
the men . involved is a notorious Jewish convert in the - United
w ho is spearheading the missionary movement in Israel.

In an effort to make every
officer and member of the De-
troit Israel Bond Board of Gov-
ernors a bond owner, each group
showing 100% coverage by
March 15 will receive a silver
candelabra from Israel, it was
announced by the local bond of-
fice.
Awards of the candelabra will
be made during the combina-
tion Passover Week- National
Award Week at the home of
Mrs. Phillip Stollman, Thursday,
April 2. As additional
to back up Israel with bond
buyers, the name- of each organ-
ization showing complete cover-
age will be inscribed on a lead-
ership scroll of honor to be for-
warded to Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion in Israel.
Groups participating in the
leadership roll call are Hadas-
sah, American Jewish Congress,
Bnai Brith, Mizrachi Women,
Jewish National Fund, Infants
Service Group, Hebrew Cultural
Society, and the Sisterhood of
Adas Shalom Synagogue.
