A Statement on Developments in Eastern Europe

In nearly • fifteen years of life saving work the United Jewish
Appeal has rescued or aided 2,240,000 people.
These are lives that might otherwise have been lost to hunger,
disease and oppression.
These lives saved show what can be done by free and deter-
mined men in the face of catastrophe and tyranny.
But today the headlines and newscasts tell of a new tyranny.
From behind the Iron Curtain come terrifying signs that
Jews are again being singled out for attack.
, •
Free men everywhere ask this question:
Must two and a half million Jews in Eastern Europe, survi-
vors of the Hitler holocaust, fear for their safety once more?

Its Humanity's Name

In this dark and terrible hour that seems like 1933 not 1953, there
is, however, one great difference between yesterday and today.
Today — there is a State of Israel.
The hope that lifts the hearts of anxious millions is the
knowledge that Israel's door stands wide open to every Jew in

need of refuge.
A tablet fixed to the Statue of Liberty has these words
engraved upon it:
"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free . .

Israel's leaders have addressed themselves to the Soviet
countries in virtually the same words.
They have called on them—in the name of humanity—to let
their Jewish populations emigrate to the new state,.
It remains to be seen if this will be done.

What We Must Do Now

Meanwhile, in this emergency there are vital tasks that need
doing.
If a new refugee wave is coming, then our help must be ready.
If more refugees will be arriving in Israel, then we must help
Israel be ready to receive them.
Realize that our help is needed quickly, swiftly—for time
lost now can mean lives lost later.
Remember that even in the darkest days of the last fifteen
years, lives were saved by swift, concerted action—that since
the war U. J. A. funds helped 623,000 Jews from Iron Curtain
countries alone, to reach Israel and other democratic states.
To the continuation of its life saving, life building work in
1953, the United Jewish Appeal invites all Americans.
To save lives, to aid democracy, to aid Israel—the United
Jewish Appeal urges your help to meet crucial 1953 needs.
Because lives depend on us—give more, and get others to

give more—today.
