Jewish Mother Publishes Poems
In Book. Titled 'Devil 's Paint Brushes'
A 28-year-old Detroit mother
has had her first book of poems
published by the Canterbury
Press in Cambridge, Mass.
Florence Goodman, who start-
ed writing poetry when her hus-
band entered service in World
War II, labored over the enter-
prise for a year before submit-
ting it for publication. The vol-
ume is called "Devil's Paint
Brushes," and is on sale at
Doubleday Book stores.
The young poetess lives with
her husband, Calvin. and two
youngsters at 18664 Faust. Mr.
Goodman is . an engineering
graduate from Harvard, and a
professor at the Detroit Insti-
tute of Technology.
While not a Jewish poet, she
has included a number of poems
on Jewish themes in her first
work. One, "A Death," tells of
the passing of her_grandmother:
The oxygen tent defeated, de-
flated,
Victorious your purr soul.
Unwound the scarcely white
Riners of your repressed hair,
Bound the barely fleshed
Strands of your muscleless limbs.

ous poet when she presented a
reading of her poems at Harvard
while her husband was attend-
ing school here. Her works won
her the acclaim of members of
the English faculty, and she
seriously worked on a lyric style
which has been developed bril-
liantly.
