contribution of U.S. Jewish GIs
in the Korean War is included
in one of the latest films to be
released here on the conflict.

The spirit which animated
the preparation and publication
of this volume is best expressed
in the message from Mrs. Eve-
lyn A. Margolis which appears
at i t s beginning. Addressing
' herself to the pupils of the late
Prof. Margolis, she says: ". .
when, after the lapse of 20 years,
mature men holding responsible
positions, having obtained sta-
ture each in his own field, still
feel that they owe a debt of gra-
1' titude which must be paid and,
i, prompted by respect and affec-
'. tion, proceed to pay that debt,
the memorial they create does
great honor, not only to their
teacher, but to the men them-
selves." The affection and res-
pect that Mrs. Margolis speaks
of are evident on every page of
; this book.
After a graceful foreword by

appreciative biography by Dr.
Robert Gordis, professor of Bible
at Jewish Theological Seminary.

scholarship-- was barely begin- !
ning to gain recognition. Mar-
, golis' life was. in fact, far from
easy even after he had earned

Jewish scholar. strangely
enough, in view of the role he
played : in the past, was not
granted the economic ease or
the social recognition corm -nen-
s irate with his cultural con-

tribution to the community. Dr. -
:. Gordis' article indicates the
fight which Prof. Margolis car-

cultural level of Jewish life in
the United Stat-es.

sight into Margolis' remarkable
contribution to the study of

Harry M. Orlinsky discusses
, Margolis' almost revolutionary
0 work on the Septuagint, t h e
, earliest translation of the Bible i

There follows a discussion by
Dr. Joshua Bloch. Chief of the
/ Jewish Division of the New York
Public Library. of the books and
articles written by Prof. Margolis
on the. history and philosophy
of Judaism. For. as the volume
repeatedly ma kes clear, Prof.
- Margolis was not a narrow,
- ivory-tower scholar; he was in-
tensely interested in history and
„religion, especially Jewish his-
I tory and Jewish religion. The
one-volume "History of the Jew-
ish People." which The Jewish
'Publication Society of America
commissioned him and Prof.
Alexander Marx to write, was an
f achievement which few can ap-
preciate. It is encyclopedic in
content. as was to have been
expected from two such eminent
:authorities.
