as seven in her home at one
time and remembers clearly the
beginnings of each one of her
sons. Some of her foster children
have lived with her for 15 and
16 years.
"I put them all on the road
toward a good life," she relates.
"My 'family' is represented in
almost all of the professions.
There are among them doctors.
graduate pharmacists, psycholo-
gists. an artist. wholesale mer-
chants. one tool and diemaker.
attorneys. several salesmen and
others." She states that she
never - pushed" her boys when
they came to live with her. She
waited patiently until they were
ready to accept her and she
say:. - I was there with a hug.
and a kiss. and a word of en-
couragement."
One of her sons never said
hello or goodbye, or any word of
greeting until he had lived with
her for four weeks. Suddenly,
she remembers. "he blossomed
out. and vied for my attention."
Another was too .frightened to
eat in the dining room and had
his meals in he kitchen until
one Friday night he appered

place in the dining room which
had always been set for him.
Mrs. Masserman remembers that
no one commented about this.

Mrs. Masserman kept the
florists busy on Mother's Day
and other festive occasions. Dur-
ing the warier home was filled
with flowers telegraphed from
overseas by her sons who were
fighting in Europe or in the
Pacific. When the war was over.
she was particularly worried be-
cause she hadn't heard from one
foster son who had been listed
as - missing in action." At two
one morning she received a long
distance call from a New York
hospital from the soldier with
this simple hart-warming mes-
sage: "Massie (as she was dub-
bed by some I'm still alive.
thank God. and I'm coming
home." He did come home and
lived with her until his mar-
ria.L,Te two years ago.
Mrs. Masserman has broken a
precedent recently on her record
of sons and now has a foster
daughter in her home.
In speaking of her experiences
as a foster mother, Mrs. Masser-
man. widow for many years.
says: "No amount of money
could ever repay me for the
memories I'll always have of my
wonderful family."
