THE JEWISH NEWS-1 5 Israel Retains Summer Time
P

Friday, October 5, 1951
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Owing to
the power shortage, Israel will
continue "summer time" beyond
Oct. 1, and will remain three
hours ahead of Greenwich Mer-
idian Time, -instead of the nor-
mal two hours.

WHAT EVER did
WONDER WHAT
happen to that supposed associa-
tion that was on the way toward
being organized among the
kosher caterers of Detroit? , . .
Don't tell us it's the same old
story again! .. . We mean that
every year it's the same thing
. . . Enthusiasm prevails among
the kosher caterers ... and then
nothing happens . . . This time
we felt sure the association was
going to be a certainty . . . what
with barrister Donald Wexler
drawing up by-laws, etc. . . . but
from the looks of things it's
probably another fizzle- --out.

SAM COBLE, elevator man in
a downtown office building (he
doesn't want us to say where)
grew weary of repeated requests
for the time • . . so he put up a
shelf in the corner of his eleva-
tror, placed a clock on it . . .
Now people ask, "Is your clock
right?"
A FEW WEEKS AGO, the
General Maurice Rose Post of
the JWV presented a flag to the 1
Chinese-American Post of the I
AMVETS, and were entertained
with a Chinese dinner . . . The
sequel to this • unique affair is
scheduled for October 17 . . .
when the Chinese vets will be
entertained by the Maurice Rose
Post . • . at a lox and bagel eve-
ning . . . Walter Nussbaum,
commander of the Rose Post,
passes on the information that
his Post felt the obligation to
honor the Chinese vets .
partly because of unfair misun-
derstandings that have gained
currency since the outbreak of
the Korean hostilities.

A FIRST EXAMINATION of
the season was being held at
Crossman Intermediate in little
Emma Jane Rudack's classroom
. . . and the question was asked,
"Upon what do hibernating ani-
mals subsist during the winter?"
... Emma Jane thought for sev-
eral minutes and then wrote,
"On the hope of a coming
spring."
YOUNG ROY WOOLF takes
after his dad. Sammy Woolf,
popular musical songster, in that
both have a tendency to give all
they've got in whatever task
they may undertake' . . . How-
ever, 15-year-old Roy gave it too
much in trying out for the Cen-
tral High football squad . . .
and suffered a head concussion
when his helmet flew off while
doing a bit of strenuous tack-
ling . It sure gave Sammy and
Ann a scare . . . but, as the say-
ing goes, you can't keep a good
man down . • . and so Roy is
rapidly recuperating. with signs
showing that he'll soon- be back
in there again.

LITTLE GIRL CAME into
Barton's Chdcolates on Six Mile
Rd. and asked for a sample piece
of candy „ . which the girl be-
hind the counter pleasantly
gave her ... The little lady then
asked for a bag in which to put
her bread . . . The Barton girl
said, "If you'll give me a piece
of bread I'll give you a bag".
. . . and the youngster replied,
"Oh, no! Its for my grand-
mother!"

JACK CITRON, men's haber-
dasher on Washington Blvd., is
back in the groove again . . . be-
hind the "good ol' counter" . . .
after spending four days in a
hospital following an automobile
accident he would like to forget
that recently happened in Ohio.

THREE SMALL BOYS, David
J. Croll. 7, Albert Migdal, 11,
and Phillip Weiss, 12, collected
$9.50 from a game-playing party
in David's basement, 3358 Oak-
man, and turned it over to the
Cancer Foundation . . remem - .
bering that others were suffer-
ing and need help . . even
though the three lads them-
selves are deaf.

A GREAT FUTURE IS pre-
dicted for Michael Gaines, whose
ability in the entertainment
field has been amazing oldsters
say his parents, Harry and Selma
Gaines . ..Only 14 years old now,
Michael has been writing scripts
and producing disc-jockey radio
shows since he was 11 ... Three
years ago he was a disc-jockey
himself on WDTR, writing his
own script for the 45 minute
show . . . Next month, Michael
and two other Hutchins Inter-
mediate students, will be on the
air again doing a disc-jockey
program . . . For this, the tal-
ented youth not only has writ-
ten the script but has produced
a 45 minute show . . . He and
his sister. Sharon, entertain for
charities and Jewish organiza-
tions . . . She sings and does
some pantomime work. while.
Michael sings, plays the ukelee
and piano and specializes in
pantomime.

SI WEINGARDEN will cele-
brate his 42nd year as a news-
boy in front of the Majestic
Bldg., March 15 . . . and the
very likeable. gent is mighty
proud about this fact as he looks
to the oncoming snow storms
with an attitude of "it doesn't
bother me anymore." . . . Si was
170 years old, last Wednesday.
