Facts You Should Know . .
Why is it customary to blow the shofar at the
end of the Yom Kippur day service?
A. number of interesting explanations are of-
fered by various sources. Generally, this blast is
considered a commemorative feature of the Jubi-
lee year when the shofar would be sounded at
the end of the Day of Atonement to set the
slaves free. In this sense blowing the shofar at
the end of the service indicates our freedom from
sin and the fear of punishment. Some writers
indicate that the sounding of the shofar heralds
the departure of the Almighty who rises to his
heavenly throne after a day of judgement, just
as trumpets announce the departure of mon-
archs or their arrival. Others claim that it was
originally done to announce to those at home
that the day of fasting had ended and it was
time to prepare the meal that breaks the fast
and feed the family. Others claim that it is
blown to confuse Satan who seeks to find fault
with God's children after they have been for-
given. The Hassidic sources feel that the shofar
is the agent of defense before the throne of
judgment. After the day is over and it has tri-
umphantly won the case for its constituents it
sounds off in triumph and pageantry to cele-
brate its victory. Thus the blast of the shofar
after the Yom Kippur day might be a signal of
Victory.
Why is the Book of Jonah read during the
afternoon service in the synagogue on Yom Kip-
pur?
The parallel of the plight of the people of
Nineveh to the people of Israel on Yom Kippur
day is self-evident. Even though wicked, the
people of Nineveh were forgiven and their pun-
ishment withheld because they fasted and re-
pented. The people of Israel, likewise, fast and
repent on Yom Kippur day and are shown the
Biblical example of Nineveh to instill them with
confidence that such action brings forgiveness.
Others like to think of the. moral charge handed
to the people through the story of Jonah: Jonah
tried to escape his responsibility and found him-
self caught in the web of circumstance that corn-
'Candle Light Stories'
Hanukah Enhanced by
Book of Freehof Stories
Publication of Hanukah stories at this early
date is a bit early, but perhaps it is wise—in
order to assure that such holiday material
reaches parents in time for the festival, so that
they may be presented- to the children. It is an
effective way of teaching them the importance
of the festival.
Thus, Bloch Publishing Co. has rendered a .
service by issuing at this time "Candle Light
Stories: Eight Little Tales for Chanuko" by
Lillian S. Freehof, the wife of Rabbi Solomon
B. Freehof of Pittsburgh.
A transcriber and teacher of Braille, Mrs.
Freehof, who is an active leader in Pittsburgh
social service activities, proves in this book that ,
she has talent for story-telling. Born in Chicago
in 1906, she received her A. B, degree from the
University of Pittsburgh.
Her "Candle Light Stories," beautifully illus-
trated by Jane Bearman, contains eight splendid
stories, each of which helps make Hanukah a
delightful and joyous festival and elevates the
Maccabean holiday to a place of great impor-
tance in Jewish life. - The Hanukah songs, the
emphasis on traditions and customs, the sug-
gestions for parties and theatrical presentations,
all give new life to a great holiday.
Mrs. Freehof has felt that enthusiasm has
been lacking in the observance of Hanukah. She
has therefore written these stories to inject new
spirit in it.
Not only the children, but teachers and par-
ents will find this work invaluable in their ef-
forts to enhance the festival at home and in
school rooms.
