Spain Jubilant as Columbus Finds New Route
To India; Six Jews Play Role in Expedition
GRANADA, April 16, 1493—All
Tourists in Israel
Given New Advantages
TEL AVIV, (ISI)—The Tourist
department of the government
of Israel has announced a new
plan known as service for tour-
ists in Israel (S.T.I.), under
which tourists may enjoy a flat
reduction of 25% on hotel
accommodations, non - austeiity
meals, sight-seeing trips and
purchases in tourist shops of
souvenirs, jewelry, leather goods,
apparel and food parcels. In ad-
dition, tourists—who may buy
food and merchandise in unlim-
ited quantities—are exempt from
luxury and purchase taxes.
Upon arrival in Israel, tourists
may obtain special S.T.I. letters
of credit at the ports of entry,
banks, leading modern hotels,
and the following licensed travel
agencies: American E x p r es s,
Thomas Cook and Peltours. Each
purchase will be recorded by the
seller on the letter of credit, the
balance of which may be cashed
at any time in Israel currency,
or, on leaving the country, in
the same currency in which it
was originally purchased.
The security of the letters of
credit is analogous to that of
travelers' checks, but they are
valid only for three months
from date of purchase. They
may, however, be renewed at
authorized banks.
Accommodations in leading ho-
tels will be available only for
tourists who participate in this
service. Bookings may be made
through travel agents.
A booklet describing the new
arrangement is now available
at the Israel National Tourist
Center, 11 E. '70th St., New York.

Jewish cartographer. known
throughout the world for his
excellent map-making, the trip
might not have been possible,
since Columbus used his maps
as navigational charts.
Had it not been for the influ-
ence of Luis de Santangel, chan-
cellor of the royal household,
and Gabriel Sanchez, chief
treasurer of Aragon, who used
their influence on their royal
majesties to allow the journey,
thsa new route might not have
been discOvered for some time.
. Anticipating a meeting with
Asiatic inhabitants, the expedi-
tion was supplied with Luis de
Torres, a Jewish interpreter, who
speaks Hebrew, Chaldaic and
some Arabic. Referring to these
men as Jews means that they
were born as such, as under the
recent Grand Inquisition in
Spain, all Jews embrace Christi-
anity or at least profess to
cling to it.

astounding news of a new trade

The return of Columbus has

to be a vindication of his much-
