First Flax in Israel

THE JEWISH NEWS--55

The harvesting of the first
flax grown in Israel recently,
details of which were revealed
here by the American Friends of
the Hebrev,-7.- University, draws
attention to the vital work being
carried out at the University's
School of Agriculture.
Concerned with furthering the
practical development of the
land, the school has, for a num-
ber of years, been experiment-
ing with the cultivation of flax,
a source of linen thread, linseed
oil and straw, whibh can be util-
ized for the manufacture of
paper.

Washington's Letter
On Tolerance Read by
61 Year-Old Touro Shul

NEWPORT, R.I., (JTA) — Ex-
ercises commemorating tht 161st
anniversary of the letter George
Washington sent to Touro Sy-
nagogue here proclaiming reli-
gious tolerance, were held in the
historic edifice.
Gov. Dennis J. Roberts told
the assembly that "this Newport
was an important city and its
Hebrews made themselves an
important and valued part of
community life. They were dis-
tinguished individuals going
from the synagogue to make
golden pages in annals of
Americanism, bringing to life
the invocation of Washington in
his precious letter. "It will be a
tragedy if the lineal_ and colla-
t e r a l descendants of those
Americans to whom Washing-
ton wrote, pregnant with pre-
caution and prophecy, should
forget the tradition of the Torah
and Talmud."

JERUSALEM, (JTA)-L--A three-
month budget requesting 27,-
400,000 pounds for the October-
December fiscal period was pre-
sented to the Israel parliament.

Daughter Enters Appeal
For Nazi von Neurath

MUNICH, (JTA)—The daugh-
ter of Baron Constantin von
Neurath, former Nazi Foreign
Minister and Hitler's "Protector"
for Bohemia and Moravia, has
appealed to Premier Josef Stalin
of Russia asking his consent to
the release of her father from
Spandau Prison in Germany.
Von Neurath is serving a 15-
year term following his convic-
tion by the Nuremberg Tribunal
for war crimes. During the trial
he admitted responsibility for a
plan to destroy the Czechoslovak
nation by the systematic elimin-
ation of its educated class. He
also told the court that he be-
lieved the persecution of the
Jews by the Nazi regime had
been necessary.
During his regime in Czecho-
slovakia, von Neurath once re-
fused to sign anti-Jewish legis-
lation for the Protectorate be-
cause he believed the draft sub-
mitted fol. his signature was too
lenient.
