Gov. Dennis J. Roberts told the assembly that "this Newport was an important city and its Hebrews made themselves an important and valued part of community life. Von Neurath is serving a 15- year term following his convic- tion by the Nuremberg Tribunal for war crimes. During the trial he admitted responsibility for a plan to destroy the Czechoslovak nation by the systematic elimin- ation of its educated class. He also told the court that he be- lieved the persecution of the Jews by the Nazi regime had been necessary. During his regime in Czecho- slovakia, von Neurath once re- fused to sign anti-Jewish legis- lation for the Protectorate be- cause he believed the draft sub- mitted fol. his signature was too lenient.
