A sentimental High Holy Day
For these varied services, what
can a would-be cantor expect in
working conditions and remun-
eration? Most full-time cantors
earn between $4,000 and $8.000
a year, with exceptionally gifted
ones in the majoi. Jewish cen-
ters earning as ranch as $15,-

whose voices will be lifted once
again in the familiar and
haunting traditional Jewish • lit-

achieved stardom, they have not
forgotten the synagogue.
The source for both syna- -
gogue music a n d the men
who chanted it throughout
American Jewish history has
been the European centers of
Jewish life. The prospective
chazen received his training
from a practicing cantor, and
from this tutoring system
came most of the cantors in
American synagogues today.
Cantors have traditionally had
• duties other than their chant-
ing. and the HUC school trains
its graduates to serve as direc-
tors of religious schools and as
teachers of Hebrew, in addition
to the sDeCifle training for chaz-
zanuth.

Several years ago, an attempt
was made to bring all the Jew-
ish seminaries together to create
one school of sacred music for
all branches of American Juda-
ism but the effort failed.
However, the Hebrew Union
College, a leading Reform sem-
inary, established the Hebrew
Union School of Sacred Music
in New York, the only school
for cantors in the world. The
first class was graduated last
June.
Though it is a Reform-spon-

insists on complete freedom of
religious expression and prepares
its students to serve in any of
the three groups in Judaism.
