LISTENING
IN LOS ANGELES, last week,
former Detroiter Herman
Abramson, was given a testi-
monial dinner on his 65th birth-
day by the employees of the
steel company he has done so
much to help build . . Called
upon to say a few words, after
listening to the affair chair-
man's praises, Abramson casu-
ally said, "Thank you, Mr. Cole
(Phillip H. Cole, also from De-
troit), thank you very much in-
deed for those sweet words. Now
I know how a buckwheat cake
feels when molasses is poured
on it!" . Turning toward the
gathered assemblage of workers,
Abramson continued, • "Y o u r
chairman has referred to my
executive ability. I can't help
recalling the small boy who
asked his father to define the
term. 'Executive ability, my lad,'
said the wise parent, 'is the art
of getting credit for all the hard
work that somebody else does'."
... According to Reva Schneider,
secretary to Abramson, and also
a former Detroiter, there were
tears in her boss' eyes as he re-
ceived a watch engraved with
the name of every employee ..
plus a set of luggage, one piece
of which was filled with con-
gratulatory notes from each of
the plant's personnel.
.
AT BELLE ISLE, recently, dur-
ing Detroit's 250th anniversary
celebration, Mrs. Morris Kalman
took her son, Barry, to his first
concert . Valter Poole was
leading the orchestra and di-
recting the soprano soloist as
well . . . Barry was greatly in-
terested and asked, "Mother why
is that man shaking that stick
at the lady?" . . Mrs. Kalman
told him to be a bit more quiet
. that he wasn't shaking the
stick at her .. "Then," asked
young Barry, "what is she
screaming about?"

last week the question arose as
to why there are so few women
after-dinner speakers . . and
Bob Siegel answered, "Frankly,
the only reason I can think of
is that not many of 'em can
wait that long to talk!"

Brith Lodge, is a bit leery about
bowling, this year, in the lodge

Last year, after returning 'from

astoundingly high score of 272

"go make a bum out of myself"

come Sept. 10, Ludwig will be
out there kegling for all he's
