Mrs. Rebekah Kohut, one of
the founders of the National
Council of Jewish Women and
an honorary vice-president of
that organization, died recently
in New York at the age of 86.
Mrs. Kohut's work as a leader
in Jewish welfare; education and
cultural activities earned na-
tionwide recognition. The late
Mayor LaGuardia said of her,
"She was one of the first to put
science and intelligence i n t
philanthropy." Much of her life
work was devoted to employ-
ment problems. As one of six-
teen members of a New York
State commission on unemploy-
ment in 1932, she alone ad-
vocated a system of unemploy-
ment insurance-a stand which
caused many women's organiza-
lions to congratulate her on her
courage and wisdom. Mrs. Kohut
was also honorary life president
of the International Council of
Jewish Women and an honorary
president of the New York Sec-
tion of the National Council of
Jewish Women.
