18th anniversary as spiritual
leader of the congregation. At

The author of "Eternal Life,"
which has been widely read,
Rabbi Sperka received his edu-
cation at Chicago, and his mas-
ter's degree at the University of
Michigan. He was ordained in
Chicago in 1931.
In 1940, he was appointed
Jewish Chaplain of Michigan
State prisons, and is vice-presi-
dent of the National Council of
Jewish Chaplains in penal in-
stitutions. He is active in many
local and national organizations,
and is a board member of sev-
eral.
Rabbi Sperka is well-known to
the non-Jewish community as
well as the Jewry of Detroit.
Since 1937 he had delivered a
series of addresses and con-
ducted many religious holiday
programs over the air.
`Faith and the Atom' Is
Rabbi Fram's Sermon
"The Encounter Between
Faith and the Atom" will be the
subject of Rabbi Leon Fram's
sermon at Sabbath eve services
at 8:30 p.m., today at Temple
Israel. His sermon will include-
a report on the National Con-
ference of clergymen held in
Washington, D. C., June 13.
Rabbi Fram, a delegate to the
conference, was appointed by
the Synagogue Council of Amer-
ica.
At the social hour following the
service, the congregation will be
the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Les-
lie Schmier on the naming of
their infant daughter.
The annual congregation and
religious school picnic will be
held June 24 at Lola Valley
Park. Boy Scout Troop and
Cub Pack No. 446 will take an
active part in the program.

president of Cong. Adas Shalom
at the annual meeting on Tues-
day evening. Mr. Epstein, who
has been active in . numerous

treasurer of Adas Shalom.

Simmers and David Desow, sec-
retaries; Charles Charlip, treas-
urer; and George Spoon, ser-
geant-at-arms.

Synagogue on Wednesday eve-
ning.

nual confirmation service will be
held at . 10 a.m., Sunday in the
auditorium.

service blending music, art and
drama. The program, •prepared
under the supervision of Rabbi
Jacob E. Segal, will be dedicated
to the theme of "Torah."
The Confirmands will present
the cantata, "What Is Torah?",
composed by Judith and Ira Eis-
enstein and conducted by Can-
tor Nicholas Fenakel. Musical
accompaniment will be provided
by Lillian Robbins Zellman and
a string quartet from the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra under the
leadership of Michael Bistritzky.
Admission to reserved sections
will be by ticket only. The doors
will close at 9:50, and no one
will be admitted after the start
of the service.
Hebrew U. Prof. Honored

class will be "Books of the
Bible," and each one of the

The ceremony will be embel-
lished by songs of the graduates,
and. the choir of the Sisterhood
will render hymns. The musical
part of the exercises is under
the direction of Cantor Adler.
