history, are now in this country
on a goodwill visit to cities along
the eastern coast of the United
States and in conjunction with

The flotilla is composed of a
frigate, "Misgav" (Secure
Haven) , and a • corvette, "Ha.ga-
nah" (Defense) .,,,Both ships are
under the command of 30-year-
old Commander Shloma Erel,
who served with the United
States Maritime Fleet both in
the Battle of the Atlantic and
in the Battle of the Pacific in
World War II. The ships are
c-- manned by 191 officers and men,
-• all of them veterans of Israel's
- War of Independence in 1948,
and most of them survivors of
Nazi concen.tartion camps. Mem-
bers of the crew emigrated to
Israel from 24 different coun-

The warships were welcomed
in New York by a delegation
headed by Charles Horowitz,
Deputy Mayor of New York,
Arthur Lourie, Israel ConSul
General in New York, and Henry
Morgenthau, Jr., chairman of
the board of governors of the
American Financial and Devel-
opment Corporation for Israel,
which is directing the sale of
State of Israel Bonds in this
country.
