Harvard Sift Anti-Semitic Posters;
Smear Tactics Said to Be Inside Job
THE JEWISH NEWS-19

Long Waiting Over
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., (AJP) —
A full-scale probe into the ap-
pearance of violently anti-Semi-
tic posters on campus grounds
was launched by officials of
Harvard University. Jewish
sources believed the smear to
be "an inside job."
Action by Harvard officials
came on the heels of a double,
barreled request by both the
Boston Anti-Defamation League
and the Jewish Community
Council for an all-out investiga-
tion into the appearance of the
anti-Jewish posters in the uni-
versity yard on May 1.
D e s cribed as mimeographed
sheets by Isadore Zack, New
England ADE civil rights direc-
tor, the posters appeared under
the heading "Jewish Honor
Roll."
There were two rows of three
circles each, Zack said, and each
circle contained the name of
a person of Jewish descent who
had either been tried on atom-
espionage charges or was invol-
ved in Communist undertak-
ings. Under the circles were six
paragraphs each starting with
the word, "Jewish," in capital
letters.
The contents blamed Jews for
for making Hollywood "im-
moral," "ruining" New York City
and Miami and other smears.
The appearance of "hook noses"
in television was also assailed.
The posters praised Nazi Ger-
many as the only country "with
guts enough to kick them out."
A final paragraph gave rise to
the belief by Jewish leaders that
Adler's Wish to Return to
U.S. Starts Paper Feud
NEW YORK (AJP)—Harmoni-
ca artist Larry Adler's decision
against staying in Israel because
he hopes to return to the United
States drew a blast about Adler's
alleged Communist connections
from Hearst columnist Cholly
Knickerbocker.
The Jewish artist said in Lon-
don that he had been invited
to settle in Israel where his
recent tour had drawn huge and
enthusiastic audiences.
Adler told an American cor-
respondent that he hoped the
excitement over charges of in-
volvement in pro - Communist
front groups would eventually
"blow over", so that he could
resume his concert career in the
United States.

of 24 Jewish notables came to

McGee, a Negro who has been

The appeal cited a statement

The libel suit of Henry H.
Klein, one of the defense law-
yers in the famous wartime sedi-
tion case against the AJCon-
gress, and Samuel Caplan, editor
of Congress Weekly, resulted in
a unanimous verdict for the
defense. -
Klein had complained against
-an editorial published in Con-
gress Weekly in 1944 at the time
of the sedition trial against
Joseph McWilliams, Elizabeth
Dilling and others. The editorial
referred to Klein as "a modern
renegade."
The jury in the Klein case,
tried before Justice Dennis Ca-
halan in NY Supreme Court,
unanimously ruled for the de-
fendants.
Klein represented himself at
the trial, and the defense was
represented by Will Maslow and
Shad Polier.
The suit against AJCongress
and Caplan was the Second in a
series of five which. Klein has
brought against various publish- .
ers, all arising from comments
on his behavior during the se-
dition trial. His suit against the
newspaper PM also resulted in a
verdict for the defense. His 1
suits against the New York Post,
the American Hebrew and the
Jewish Examiner are still pend-
ing.

His story deals with the era
of Napoleon and his ill-fated
invasion of Russia. It is the
story of a Jewish family and its
emotional conflicts, bf a man
who was wed to a girl he did
not love and who sought to
break ties which were like
chains to him. He sought di-
vorce and was denied it. He
went with Jews to toil the soil,
under grant of Tzar Alexander
and witnessed plague and pesti-
lence in which his own first-
born was a victim.
Later came reconciliation and
discovery of the affection he
craved for in his wife. The path
towards it is delineated master-
fully, and "The Chain and the
Link" emerges a magnificent
story.
The maladjustments, the life
in the Jewish community, the
piety and devotion of Torah-
study — these are among the
many elements in the book that
will enchant the reader. The
use of parables is resorted to
with great skill and the able
author reveals a thorough un-
derstanding of Jewish life in the
old world.
"The Chain and the Link,"
published by World Publishing
Co. (2231 W. 110th St., Cleveland
2), takes its place among the
best novels of this decade.
