Ben-Gurion wherever he ap-
peared 'so far on his three-week
visit in the United States.
Beginning with his confer-
ences with President Truman
and Secretary of State Acheson
in Washington, continuing with
the royal welcome he received
in New York on Wednesday and
the acclaim that was scheduled
for him at the Madison Square
Garden meeting in New York on
May 10. Mr. Ben-Gurion held the
limelight.
. His itinerary includes his ar-
rival in Detroit on May 20 and
this community's reception on
May 21, with a public welcome
now being planned at the City
Hall and a dinner for major
• bond drive leaders in the eve-
ning. During his stay here he
will visit major auto plants.
In the parade that was ar-
ranged in New York; U. S. Army
groups and 200 Israeli sailors,
participated. A force of 3,000
policemen lined the route and
5,000 spectators were seated in
special stands at the City Hall.
Mr. Ben-Gurion saw President
Truman Tuesday morning, at an
additional meeting after confer-
ring with the President on Fri-
day. Ambassador Eban and
Israel Military Attache Col.
Chaim Herzog accompanied the
Prime Minister.
W. Averill Harriman; special
assistant to President Truman,
revealed that he had talked for
over an hour with 'Premier Ben-
Gurion and Ambassador Eban
about Israel's immigration prob-
lems and other. matters which
he said could not be disclosed.

opportunity of his first meeting
with Ben..-Gurion. to inquire
about conditions in the Near
East. He added that they dis-
cussed general matters of inter-
est to the two countries but that
it was impossible to get into de-
taill Mr. Ben-Gurion was in
Washington to discuss "certain
matters" with the United States
Government, Mr. Harriman de-
clared. •
The New York Times, in an
editorial welcoming the Israeli
Premier said: "David Ben-
Gurion is welCome in the United
States as Premier of a friendly
foreign country, as a statesni.an
of international' renown and as
an outstanding leader of democ-
racy in a most sensitive part of
this troubled world. The Premier
of Israel will discover during hiS
, brief visit here that Americans
have the warmest regard for the
energy, ability and idealism that
have combined to build up. in
three short years a new and
vibrant state in the Middle East.
Overcoming every obstacle that
man and nature could put in
their path, the pioneers of
Israel — among whom Ben-
Gurion himself is Pre-eminent—
have succeeded in establishing
their homeland on a solid moral
and political foundation.
"Vast new funds are still
needed for its development, and
they are being sought here
through pri.vate investors as
well as through government as-
sistance. We are sure that
Premier Ben-Gurion_ will find a
receptive. and sympathetic audi-
ence wherever he goes through-
out the United States," the edi-
torial concluded.
