TEL AVIV—Since there is no
possibility of producing a suf-
ficient supply of meat locally,
Israel has turned to the fish-
producing industry as the one
hope of supplying high protein
food for the entire population
from local sources of supply. At
present a good proportion of the
fish consumed in Israel is still
obtained from abroad.
The first modern Jewish fish-
ermen in this country started
operation in 1937 with a total
catch of eight tons. Now the
trade employs 1,000 persons, in-
cluding nearly 100 experienced
foreigners, mainly Italians, who
bring their boats to Israel
waters and train Israelis on
them. Foreign experts are in-
vited for protracted stays to
teach ocean and lake-fishing
methods.
The first local school for fish-
ermen was recently opened at
Mikhmoreth and offers ado-
lescents free board together
• with the three-year course.
However, it has succeeded in
attracting homeless children al-
most exclusively. A similar in-
stitute for still younger candi-
dates is under construction on
the coast south of Tel Aviv.
Eight of the 15 fishing villages
in Israel, all based on mixed
farming, were founded after the
War of Independence. In these
farms, and through partnership
in regular companies, Histadrut
or its members hold a 90 per-
cent interest in all Israel fish-
ing enterprises.
Fish imports still require
about two million pounds in
foreign exchange per year as

consumption amounts to over
twenty thousand tons or about
50 pounds per person, with only
7,000 tons caught locally last
year. This in itself represents
nearly a 100 percent increase
over 1949, and if development
continues at the same rate, Is-
rael may raise its entire fish
supply by 1952.
