Hearst Accepts
Invitation to Join
Salute to Israel

NEW YORK •(AJP)—William
Randolph Hearst, long-time tar-
get of Jewish groups for carry-
ing anti-Jewish columnists, has
accepted an invitation to be a
sponsor of a city-wide celebra-
tion of the third anniversary of
the state of Israel.
The acceptance was revealed
in the New York Journal-Ameri-
can which published the text of
a letter to Hearst from Dr. Mor-
ris Giloni, executive director of
a committee for the third cele-
bration.
Westbrook Pegler, Hearst fea-
ture columnist, has been repeat-
edly condemned in past years
for thinly-veiled attacks on
American- Jews, particularly
Zionists. One Yiddish daily
blamed Hearst for allowing Peg-
le r 's column.
Earlier this year, the Haym
Solomon Foundation gave
Hearst an award and was sharp-
ly condemned in many sections
of the American Jewish press
for doing so.
The third anniversary celebra-
tion will be held at Carnegie
Hall on May 6. Dr. Giloni said in
his letter that Vice-President AI-
ben Barkley, Gov. Thomas E.
Dewey and Mayor Vineent R.
Impellitteri would be among the.
sponsors of the event.
Hearst replied that he would
be "happy and honored to be- .
come a sponsor" and described .
himself as "a strong sympathiz-:
.er with the struggle of the Jew-
ish people for freedom and in-
. dependence ever since the Mich-
ael Devitt protest against the
.Russian pogroms."
