Admonishes Zionists
to Increase Efforts for Israel
At a meeting of the Balfour
Ball Committee of the Zionist
Organization of Detroit last
Thursday night at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice A. Lan-
dau, Lawrence W. Crohn, presi-
; dent of
Zionist Council ,
of Detroit, ex-
pressed surprise
that Jews who
have a reputa-
tion for wisdom
and knowledge
have not react-
ed with greater
enthusiasm and
unde rstanding L. W. Crohn
of the revolutionary character
of present day events. That
Zionists should talk of lessening
\ their efforts at this time shows
a complete lack of understand-
ing for basic Zionist principles,
he declared.
"Zionism,"said Mr. Crohn, "was
never intended to be a move-
ment to settle millions of Jews
and then call it a day. On the
contrary, Zionism was intended
to affect all of Jewish life. Ev-
ery Jew will not live in Israel.
The Jewish people existing as a
nation should and will make a
profound difference in the lives
of Jews everywhere. Until this
is accomplished Zionism has not
made good its basic principle.
In a practical sense this means
that the Zionist Organization
and its affiliated groups must
be in the forefront of those who
help to complete the establish-
ment of the State, and also to
create elsewhere a Jewish life
which will bear the full imprint
of the new era. This is the great
challenge that faces us. Any
Zionist who fails to see this
clearly has certainly not learned
the lesson of history."
The meeting also was ad-
dressed by several of the CHAI
workers for the Balfour Ball—
those who have served faithfully
this project for the 18 years of
its existence as the fund-raising
and social project of the Zion-
ist Organization of Detroit.
Harry Cohen, chairman, urged
the workers to emphasize con-
tributions in the higher catego-
ries. "We depend entirely," said
he, "on selling tickets in the
higher denominations to raise
the funds necessary to maintain
our Zionist activity."
The Balfour Ball will be held
Saturday night, Nov. 4, at Hotel
Statler. Phil Brestoff's orches-
tra will furnish music for danc-
ing, and the usual cocktail
lounge will be set up adjoining
the ballroom.
Call Mr. Cohen, UN. 3-0412,
or the Zionist office, WO. 5-1484,
for information.
