Zionist Conference at Flint
Aims at Timely Panel Topics

An area conference for lead-
ers of the Ohio Valley and Tri-
State Regions of the Zionist
Organization of America has
been called for Sunday, Oct. 1,

convention of the Michigan
Zionist Region.
A program is planned for the

by Gene Sucov, national chair-
man, of Young Zionist Districts.
A last-minute change in pro-
gram will give Michigan Zion-
ists an opportunity to hear Carl
Alpert, national ZOA education
director, discuss programming
on the district and chapter level.
National Director
A disciasion on the floor cov-
ering membership techniques
and the implementation of, the
ZOA-Israel projects program is
also slated. These sessions will
be presided over by Herschel
Auerbach, national membership
director, and Louis A. Falk, na-
tional vice-president.
"The Michigan Region intends
to make this conference the big-
gest Zionist event of the Mid-
west, and urges our membership
in Detroit to take this short trip
to Flint, not only to listen to
what others have to say, but to
contribute in the discussions,"
asserted Morris M. Jacobs, re-
gional president, appealing for
a record attendance.
Visiting her family in Detroit
last week, Mrs. Madeleine Lewin-
Epstein, wife of Dr. Samuel
Lewin- Epstein of Jerusalem
(brother of Mrs. A. M. Hersch-
man), consented to be the prin-
cipal speaker at the luncheon
session, scheduled to commence
at 12:30 p. m. Mrs. Lewin-Ep-
stein, affectionately referred to
as the "Madeleine of Jerusa-
lem," was born in Providence,
R. I., and left with the first
Hadassah medical unit to Pal-
estine in 1918. During World
War II, and later in the Israel
War of Independence, the Lew-
in-Epstein home in Jerusalem
was a veritable soldier's club,
dispensary, field hospital and
traffic center.

Mrs. Lewin-Epstein plans to
leave for Israel on Oct. 9. Ha-
dassah leaders are urged to join
their husbands in Flint for the
Oct. 1 sessions.
Banquet Session
The banquet session, at 6:30
p. m., will bring the Hon. Elihu
D. Stone, distinguished jurist
and eloquent orator, to address
the delegates and guests. Mr.
Stone will discuss the relation-
ship of the ZOA to Israel and
vice-versa, and will ..reveal be-
hind-the-scenes maneuvers of
the Arab states in his address,
"Israel Among the Nations."
A necrology, mourning the
passing of four ZOA presidents
(Dr. Harry Friedenwald, Daniel
Frisch, Edmund Kauffman, and
Judge Morris Rothenberg) with-
in the year will be delivered by
Rabbi Leon Fram, of Temple
Israel, Detroit.
The Flint Zionist District has
extended an invitation to De-
troit Zionists to attend a cock-
tail party this Saturday, 9 p. m.
at Hotel Durant.

LONDON — An appeal to all
Jewish relief and philanthropic
organizations in Britain to "de-
vote their activities in the next
two or three years to the relief
of newcomers in Israel" was
voiced here Sunday night by Dr.
Israel Brodie, Chief Rabbi of
the British Empire, addressing
a conference of the Federation
of Jewish Relief Organizations
here.
The Chief Rabbi said : "I want
to go on record as stating that
all philanthropic relief work in
our community should go to the
relief of the newcomers in Is-
rael and, that any plans that
groups concerned may have re-
garding the extension of their
activities in other directicl:L
should be postponed."

The Ladies Auxiliary will hold
its first regular meeting of the
season at the home of Mrs. Hy
Margolis, 18490 Kentucky, 'Wed-
nesday afternoon, Oct. 11.

Youth Aliyah Brings
78,500 to Israel in Year
JERUSALEM —
Aliyah received 78,500 children
last year and is now looking af-
ter 178,000 children, Moshe Kol,
head of the Youth Aliyah
partment of the Jewish Agency,
stated this week.
The organization hope& to
take in a similar number this
year, but children over 14 years
cannot be accepted, due to fi-
nancial difficulties.
