Portugese Jewish Family Renews
Ancestral Claim to Labrador Rights

THE HAGUE, (JTA) — The
claim of the Portuguese Jewish
family De La Penha to the
possession of Labrador, Cana-
dian peninsula, was revived by
four descendants of the De La
Penha family who started a
search for documents to "prove
conclusively" their right to the
peninsula, Reuters reported.
According to . recor ds secured
by the descendants of the De
La Penha family in Canada and
London, King William the Third
of Britain was saved from
drowning in a shipwreck in 1695
by Joseph De La Penha, an
Amsterdam Jewish merchant.
In gratitude King William gave
De La Penha hereditary tenure
forever of Labrador. This grant
was legalized in 1697 in a docu-
ment signed at Het Loo Palace
in Holland and renewed 'in 1732
and 1768; the descendants of
the De La . Penha family claim.
One of the descendants, To-
bias Green of Montreal, discov-
ered in 1927 the original 1732
and 1768 documents. Some time
later, a Dutchman in London
found the original 1697 docu-
ment.
The Labrador case can to
light in 1927 when Isaac De La
Penha, a Montreal Jew who is a
direct descendant of the Am-
sterdam merchant; filed a law-
suit claiming Labrador. How-
ever, the second World War
broke out while the case was
under consideration and it was
delayed. Many members of the
family were killed in the Ger ,
man concentration camps.
The case came up again after

At Cornerstone Rites
Of 'Adopted' Settlement

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
United States and French con-

Neve Ilan settlement which was

Zionists in Long Island. The
Long Island Region has also
sent refrigerators and egg in-

Anti-Semitism Causes
Decay, Russell Warns

SYDNEY, (JTA)—

Anti-
Semitism is an obstacle to
world government, Bertrand
Russell, noted philosopher
who is visiting Australia on a
lecture tour, declared here.
"Hostility to Jews is the
most single unfortunate and
beastly example of race pre-
judice," Russell said. "Those
attributing traditional faults
to Jews are merely rational-
izing." He pointed out that
the persecution of Jews in
Spain in the Middle Ages
caused t h e decay of that
country and that Germany
was defeated in the second
World War because of Hit-
ler's anti-Jewish policy.
