`Lady From Minsk'
Is Queen of Bra
Business in U. S.

"A lady from Minsk, who at
64 is still as bright as a Christ-
mas sparkler and as nicely
rounded as a bagel," is Fortune
magazine's description of Mrs.
Ida Rosenthal, queen of the
brassiere business.
As treasurer of the Maiden-
form Brassiere Co., which han-
dles about a tenth of this coun-
try's brassiere sales, Mrs. Ro-
senthal, says Fortune, sells
more brassieres for more dol-
lars than anyone else in the
U. S.
She came to this country in
1905 at the age of 18 and went
into the dressmaking business.
By 1922, together with Mrs.
Enid Bisse'tt,' she was operating
a fashionable shop on 57th
Street. Unsatisfied with the
flapper silhouette, the partners
gave away a brassiere-like gar-
ment with each dress purchase.
In less than a year, this proj-
ect was so successful that Mrs.
Rosenthal and Mrs. Bissett, with
Mrs. Rosenthal's husband, in-
corporated the Maidenform Co.
at a total capital of $4,500. To-
day, their production reaches 12
million items annually, sold
through 9,000 retail outlets.
Price range is from $1.25 to $5.
Employee production and
specialized equipment, along
with a certain amount of con-
servatism in design, are cred-
ited, by Fortune, as the secrets
of the Rosenthals' and Maiden-
form's great success.

Charity for All

'Fighting Irish' Alums
Contribute to UJA

As a gesture of the interest of
the "Fighting Irish" in the re-
habilitation of Jewish refugees
abroad, the Notre Dame Alumni
Association of New York has
made a contribution *to the
United Jewish Appeal.
In sending the contribution
on behalf of the "Fighting
Irish" alumni, R. A. Hamilton,
chairman of the Notre Dame
Club of New York Trust Fund,
expressed his grolip's apprecia-
thin of the efforts being made
through the UJA to provide for
the humanitarian programs of
the Appeal's three constituent
agencies, the United Palestine
Appeal, Joint Distribution Com-
mittee and United Service for
New Americans.
Declaring that "charity for
and toward all, regardless of
color, creed or religion," had
-inspired the alumni group's
contribution, Hamilton praised
the part being played by the
United jewish Appeal in ad-
vancing the cause of human
freedom.

Jewish Student Fights
To Remain Here as IP
Under New U.S. Law

Invoking for the first time
the authority of the new DP
act signed on June 16 by Presi-
dent Truman, attorneys for the
American Jewish Congress re-
quested the Boston Office of the
Immigration and Naturalization
Service to permit a Jewish na-
tional of Iraq, now a student in
a Massachusetts university, to
remain in the United States as
a DP.
The attorneys argued that
the forced return of the student
to Iraq . will expose him to the
anti-Jewish persecution which
has become government policy
in that country. The identity of
the student has been withheld
to prevent Iraqi retaliation
against members of his family
who still reside in Basra.
