Israel Welcomes
Soviet Shift on
Jerusalem Issue
LAKE SUCCESS--(JTA)—Au-
brey S. Eban, Israel's perman-
ent representative to the UN,
held a conference with the chief
Soviet UN delegate Jacob A. Ma-
lik in one of a series of discus-
sions the Israel representative
is having with leading delega-
tions following the dramatic
Russian • announcement with-
drawing Soviet support for the
internationalization of Jerusa-
lem.
As a result of the Soviet
switch, it was indicated in Israel
diplomatic circles here that the
Israel government will make in-
creased efforts to arrive at a
workable solution of the Jeru-
salem problem.
It was held likely that Israel
would make new proposals to
the UN Trusteeship Council
when it meets here in June, on
the assumption that the resolu-
tion of last December establish-
ing an international regime for
the city has now lost its two-
thirds majority.
Satisfaction was expressed in
Tel Aviv by a 'spokesman of the
Israel Foreign Ministry over the
Soviet Union shift in position
on the Jerusalem issue when it
informed the United Nations
that it will no longer support
the internationalization of the
city.
The Israel official • expressed
astonishment over a statement
in the British Parliament by Un-
dersecretary Ernest Davies who
declared that Israel has suffici-
ent arms for internal security
and defense purposes. He em-
phasized that the British Fore-
ign Office has no authoritative
information on the present arm-
ament position of the Jewish
state.

Obiter Dictum
Judge Harry E. Kalodner of the U. S. Court of Appeals, a
devout Jew and trustee of Yeshiva University, recently visited the
Virgin Islands where he met the Jewish governor, Morris de
Castro . . . Following an evening reception the Governor and Mrs.
de Castro called at the jurist's hotel . . . Arter a while the Gover-
nor was seen gazing on what looked like an embroidered bag on
one of the tables . . . What attracted him about the bag was that
it had the Star of David inscribed on its front . . . When the
Judge told the Governor that the bag contained his tallis and
teffilin, without which he never travels, the Virgin Island chief
said he could not recollect ever having seen any teffilin . .. Al-
though it was almost midnight the jurist put on the tallis and
teffilin to the great satisfaction and interest of the Governor .. .
The Governor expressed regret that his 14-year-old son was not
present as a witness to so impressive an occasion . . . Inasmuch as
the Judge's party left early the next day the Governor's youngs-
ter missed the opportunity of seeing tefillin for the first time
in his life . . . Though he l et the Governor briefly, Judge Kalod-
ner carried away an excellent impression of the Jewish head
of the Virgin Islands . . . His appointment by President Truman
following some 30 years of service as secretary of the Virgin Is-
lands was upon petition of an overwhelming majority of the in-
habitants of the islands.

More Light on the Islands
There are altogether 60 Jews on the Virgin Islands and not
60 families, as erroneously reported . . . All of them are centered
on the island of St. Thomas .. . The synagogue on this island is
137 years old . . . One of the Torahs is 179 years old and the pul-
pit prayer book, printed in English and Hebrew, is 113 years old
. . There are no synagogues and probably no Jews on the rest
of the 49 of the Virgin Islands . .. The synagogue does not have
an ordained rabbi . . . This function is filled by a Mr. Sasso. a
merchant and Governor de Castro's brother-in-law, who is a lay
preacher . . . He has been conducting services at the synagogue
for 35 years . . . About a year ago. at the request of his congre-
gation, the Jewish Welfare Board sent a representative to the
Island who went through some ceremony "ordaining" Mr. Sasso
.. Sasso is known to have told visitors that he always conducts
services on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings even though
he and Mrs. Sasso and, at times, Governor and Mrs. de Castro, are
the only congregants . • . Services are held on all of the im-
portant Jewish holidays ... The synagogue is a magnificent one, of
Spanish architecture and apparantly of Sephardic :origin . . .
There were originally some 500 Jews on the Virgin Islands but
only a handful remain . .. Governor de Castro is of Spanish and
Portegese descent . . . His grandparents settled on the Islands
and his father and he lived there all their lives.

cablegram to President Chaim
Weizmann: "The people of the
United States join me on this
anniversary of the independence
of Israel in expressing to Your
Excellency and to the people of

In a Senate speech lauding
the Jewish state on the occasion
of her second anniversary, Sen-

as "one of the world's newest
