"In my fondest dreams, I did
not expect to find so many evi-
dences of real achievements as
we found in Israel last month,"
William Hordes, labor Zionist
and Jewish National Fund lead-
er, stated upon his return with
Mrs. Hordes from a month's stay
in the Jewish state.
Mr. Hordes, in whose honor a
forest is being planted by the
JNF near Jerusalem, said he is
convinced that the work of the
Jewish National Fund stands at
the root of all great efforts in
Israel and expressed the hope
that Detroit will continue its
work for the land-redemption
fund. He also stated that the
United Jewish Appeal must be
given priority in all activities for
Israel if the work for the up-
building of Israel is not to be
impeded during the coming year.
"We had the privilege of be-
ing at Lydda on Yom Kibutz
Galuyot (Day of the Ingather-
ing of the Exiles), and we were
deeply moved by the newcomers
— the Yemenites, the Iraqi, the
Iranians," he reported. "People
from many lands are joining
hands to help in Israel's recon-
struction. They are fighting
against great odds to make a
reality of Israel. It was our im-
pression that no matter how
much we do for Israel, we con-
tribute little compared with the
efforts of the builders of the
state."
Mr. and Mrs. Hordes echoed
the anxiety they said they felt
in Israel when they urged that
everything possible should be
done to assure the success of
