City Revisionists Mourn

People Make News

Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt
named Mrs. Joseph Arens, recent
DP arrival, "An outstanding wo-
man in America," and presented
her with a silver dish. Mrs.
Arens, a Catholic, saved the life
of a Jewish child,
Felicia Grunfed-
er in Warsaw,
by hiding her
from the Nazis
in a coffin and
later posing her
as a Gentile in
a concentration
camp. She re-
turned the child
to her real moth-
er, followi ng. Mrs. Arens
liberation. Mrs. Arens gave the
silver dish to HIAS for display
at its New York headquarters,
"As an indication that brotherly
love, regardless of race or creed,
alwAys has its eventual recogni-
tion."

girls plan a Bazaar project to
raise money for CARE packages
at which goods made by the girls
will be sold. The CARE packages
will go to-Israel. Lois Leutchman
is president of the club and
Thelma Dosie is group leader.

The annual Square Dance
Festival, sponsored by UNIVER-
SITY AREA WOMEN'S CLUB,
will be held Saturday night Jan.
28 at the Center. Committee co-
chairmen are Mrs. Harry Nach-
man and Mrs. Hy Brootman, Ty
Holsen will be the caller.

The COUNCIL OF CENTER
MOTHERS' CLUBS will hold a
Square Dance at 8:30 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 19 at the new
DaviSon-Dexter Branch as part
of the program being held dur-
ing Dedication Week from Jan.
15 through Jan. 22. Ruth Schul-
zinger, newly-arrived supervisor
of the Women's Health Educa-
tion department, will be caller.

CENTER SWIMMERS opened
their dual meet season by down-
ing Northeastern YMCA in a
meet at the "Y" pool, Wednes-
day evening, Dec. 21, 39 to 36.
Starring for the Center tankers
were Ray Federman who swam
on the winning Medley Relay
team, won the 100 Yards Back-
stroke and placed second in the
Individual Medley and Sol Cohen
who took the 40 Yards Free-
style and placed second in the
Century Freestyle. Others turn-
ing in star performances were
Marty Siegel, Marshall Blondy,
Don Siegan, - Marshall Cortney
and Bob Kavieff. Heavy practice
sessions will continue under
Coach Manny Ratner's guidance
until the next AAU meet at
Northwestern High School Jan.
14. Tuesday evening, Jan. 17, the
squad will meet the Detroit In-
stitute of Technology . in the
Center pool.

On Jan. 11, Sam Brown, re-
gional director of the American
Jewish Congress, will speak on
"Anti-Semitism and the Pro-
gram of the American Jewish
Congress" for the WEDNESDAY
EVENING DISCUSSION GROUP.

SWIMMING FANS are re-
minded of the year round aqua-
tic facilities at the Center: co-ed
swims are held Tuesday eve-
nings from 7:45-8:30 p. m.,
Thursday evenings from 8 to
9:30 p.m., and Sunday after-
noons from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The
pool is open to all Centermem-
bers at no extra charge; - non-
members pay a small • guest
charge.

MISCHA ELMAN will be heard
in a concert in Detroit's Music
Hall,\ Monday evening, Jan. 9.
His program will include
Sonatas by Handel and Faure,
Bach's "Chaconne" for violin
alone, Bruch's "Violin Concerto
in G-Minor" and "Prayer", a
composition by Julius Chajes.
Wienawaski's "Polonnaise Bril-
lante" will conclude the program
which will mark Mr. Elman's
40th anniversary recital.' Wolf-
gang Rose is the accompanist.

JESSE DAVIS DEAN, who re- .
ceived a bachelor-of-arts degree
from Wayne University College
of Liberal Arts in 1947, has been
named vice consul. at Haifa, Is-
rael, by the United States De-
partment of State.

DR. ABBA HILLEL SILVER
received the annual Cardozo
Memorial Award from Tau Epsi-
lon Rho, national law fraternity,
at the organization's 30th annual
convention in New York last
week. The presentation was
made at the convention dinner
by N.Y. Supreme Court Justice
Isadore Bookstein, head of the
fraternity.

LT. ROY F. GREEN AUXILI-
ARY has donated $200 to the
Memorial Home. Frieda Pantzer
was nominated aid to Israel
chairman. The next meeting
will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3 at
14600 Wyoming.

MOND BLOCH AUXILIARY will
be presided over by Mrs. Mae
Ginsberg, state department presi-
dent, on Jan. 11. Mrs. Birdie
Rosenberg, sponsor of the group,

Death of Founder's Wife

The executive committee of
the Zionists-Revisionists of De-
troit met Dec. 28, to mourn the
passing of Mrs.. Jeanne Vladimir
Jabotinsky, widow of the crea-
tor of the Revisionist movement.
The executive adopted a mem-
orial resolution which was sent
to Eri Jabotinsky, son of the Re-
visionist originators.
At the same time, the execu-
tive agreed to hold a public mass
meeting in conjunction with the
sale of Shekolim.
