Committee to Select
Wise Award Recipients
A panel of noted Americans,
under the chairmanship of
Federal Judge Simon H. Rifkind,
has accepted posts on a com-
mittee which will select the re-
cipients of the four Stephen S.
Wise Awards established by the
American Jewish Congress last
year, it is announced by Rabbi
Irving Miller, AJC president.
The awards, of $1,500 each,
are to be made annually for
outstanding service in four ma-
jor areas of Dr. Wise's interests:
the development of Israel; de-
fense of Jewish status through-
out the world; extension of civil
rights in the United States, and
the advancement O'f Jewish cul-
ture and learning.
Serving on the awards com-
mittee with Judge Rifkind will
be Dr. Abraham Sachar, presi-
dent of Brandeis University; Dr.
Abraham A. Neuman, president
of Dropsie College; Dr. Nelson
Glueck, president of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion; Dr. Israel Gold-
stein; Professor Horace Kallen;
Roger Baldwin, American Civil
Liberties Union; Walter White,
National Association for the Ad-
vancement of Colored People,
and Bartley Crum. The awards
will be presented at a dinner
in. New York City March 16.

Drake Hotel, Chicago.
Having served the nationally
both locally and nationally
in many capacities, Dr. Katzin
twice has been president of the
Michigan and Detroit groups.
He also served as national editor
of "Alpha Omegan," and in
many other official positions.
About 60 Detroit dentists and
their wives, members of the
local Alpha Omega chapter, are
this week attending the na-
tional convention in Chicago.

A gala New Year's Eve cele-
bration is scheduled to welcome
in 1950 at Bel-Aire Terrace
Room.
Artie Fields and his orchestra
will furnish the music. Sammy
Woolf, popular master-of-cer-
emonies, will head festivities.
Balloons, noisemakers, favors
and hats will be furnished.
The celebration, which begins
at 10 p.m., will be cabaret-style.

Detroit Wires Support
To Premier of Israel
Detroit Zionists' support of
the Israel government's move to
Jerusalem was transmitted to
Premier David Ben Gurion last
week as one of several hundred
wires and messages, affirming
his action. The messages were
sent through the American Zi-
onist Council.
Ring in the
(JTA) — Five
prizes of $500 each were award-
ed to three Yiddish and two He-
brew writers whose works were
selected as the best literary
works in Yiddish and Hebrew
published in the U. S. this year.
The Yiddish winners were: Jo-
seph Rolnick and H. Rosenblatt
for their books of poetry; and
Bezalel Sherman for his study
"Jews and Other Ethnic Groups
in the United States." The He-
brew winners were Harry Sack-
ler, for a volume of short stories,
"Rainbow in the Clouds"; and
Daniel Persky, for a book of
essays.
A few tickets are still available
for the Yiddish production of
"Anna Lucasta," to be presented
Sunday and Monday evenings,
Jan. 1 and 2, at Music Hall (Wil-
son Theater).
They may be reserved by call-

Miriam Kressyn will star in

Rabbi Maurice Pekarsky of
Chicago will address the open-
ing sessions of the In-Service
Training Institute Saturday and
Sunday, Jan. 14 and 15, at the
Jewish Community Center, Har-
old Silver, chairman of the In-
stitute, announced.
The In-Service Training In-
stitute, sponsored by executive
directors of Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration member agencies, was
planned to give professional
staff members a better under-
standing of the background,
structure, program and philoso-
phy of organized Jewish com-
munity service.
Rabbi Pekarsky will open the
Institute at 8 p.m. Saturday, by
discussing the topic "The De-
velopment of the Jewish Com-
munity." He will also speak Sun-
day at 1 p.m., giving the par-
ticipants a bird's-eye view of
major developments in Jewish
history in the last 200 years,
with particular emphasis on cul-
tural patterns and ideological
trends.
Subjects for the subsequent
meetings, which will be held
every Monday- evening Jan. 23
through Feb. 20, will be "The
Jewish Community of Detroit;"
"Health and Welfare Services;"
"Education, Recreation and Cul-
tural Services;" "Community
Relations" and "Role of the
Professional in the Developing
Jewish Community."
