BRETTON WOODS, N. H. —A forced into a straight jacket of In. Windsor Pulpit
warning against any form of
theocracy in Israel was sounded
by Dr. Abraham J. Feldman of
Hartford, Connecticut, in his
presidential address opening the
60th anniversary convention of
the Central Conference of Amer-
ican Rabbis on Thursday.
Dr. Feldman told almost 500
Liberal (or Reform) rabbis that
despite disavowals of theocratic
tendencies by the Minister of
Religion of the Israeli govern-
ment, and the chief Rabbi, that
there is a refusal to give re-
ligious freedom to the Liberal
Jewish communities in Israel."
Asks Democratic Fairness
"I am aware of the sympa-
thetic attitude of the many
members of the government to-
wards a democratic and. decent
response to the cry for fair play.
But is it not right to expect
that at least the assurance of
the same measure of democratic
fairness which is assured to
Christian and Moslem commun-
ities might be given to Jews
who profess Liberal Judaism?
Rabbi Feldman declared," No
Jews ought to be constrained as
to their methods and forms of
worship, which is precisely the
position of the Jewish religious
Liberals there. They are being
Colleagues Honor
Rabbi J. Eisentnan
In a statement issued in be-
half of his orthodox colleagues,
Rabbi Moses Fischer this week
paid honor to Rabbi Joseph
Eisenman, on the occasion of
his departure for Israel togeth-
er with Mrs. Eisenman.
Pointing out that Rabbi Eisend-
man has rendered 40 years of
faithful service in the ministry,
Rabbi Fischer states that the
Detroit rabbis regret their col-
league's leaving this city. Re-
calling that he arrived here 30
years ago, with Smicho from
noted rabbis in Kovna and
Bucharest, Rabbi Fischer re-
views his activities in Detroit, in
Congregations Beth Jacob and
Beth Tefiloh. Rabbis Yehudah
Levin and Ezekiel Aishishkin al-
ready served the orthodox com-
munity when he came here. To-
gether with Rabbi Eisenman
they formed the Rabbinical
Council Beth Din.
Rabbi Fischer recalls that the
orthodox rabbis cooperated in
organizing Gemiluth Chassodim
Free Loan Associaion, Home for
Aged, an orphanage, Chesed shel
Emes and Shelter Home, with
Rabbi Eisenman playing "a dis-
tinguished part in all commer-
cial work which left their im-
print on Detroit."
Rabbi Eisenman is honored
for his efforts as treasurer of
Shaarei Chesed Free , Loan Asso-
ciation in Jerusalem and in
various capacities in behalf of
the Jerusalem Diskin Orpanage.
a strict and legalistic interpre-
tation of Judaism, and are be-
ing subjected to the indignity
of being compelled to conform
in such matters as marriage and
divorce. Unless they conform,
marriages are illegal and di-
vorces are impossible."
Three Congregations
Dr. Feldman reported that
there are three Liberal congre-
gations in Israel, one each in
the principal cities of Tel Aviv,
Jerusalem and Haifa. These
number some six or seven hun-
dred families, largely new ref-
ugees. To support his contention
of discrimination against Liberal
Judaism in Israel, Dr. Feldman
noted that "of the three rabbis
in charge of these congregations,
Drs. Elk in Haifa, and Rosen-
berg in -Tel Aviv, have no stand-
ing before the rabbinical courts,
and are not permitted to of-
ficiate at weddings without
Orthodox supervision. Dr. Philipp
of Jerusalem has a quaisi-official
standing at the Rabbinical court,
and is licensed to solemnize
marriages.
Dr. Feldman also urged greater
support of the religious and
cultural aspects of Jewish life
in the United States. He slid
that the religious institutions of
American Judaism must be
maintained "not on the present
starvation diet, but adequately.
The essential and imperative
financial support of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, and the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Re-
ligion, is tragically wanting."
Praise for the American rab-
binate as a group that has "been
most vigilant in the advocacy of
the spiritual essence of Amer-
ican democracy and stalwart
defenders of American institu-
tions" was voiced by President
Harry S. Truman in a letter to
the Conference.
