Philomathies Animal
Oratory Contest Set
For Next Thursday
The Philomathic Debating Club
will hold its 34th annual oratori-
cal contest at 8:15 p. m. Thurs-
day, March 24, at Shaarey Zedek.
Competing for gold, silver, and
bronze medals will be six mem-
bers of the 51-year-old Jewish
forensic organization. They are
Elliott Beitner, Marvin Bernstein,
David Brown, Raymond Gottlieb,
Fred Horwitz, and Leonard Sand-
weiss.
A panel of three judges will
award the medals to the three
best speakers.
The program also will include
short talks by Philomathic alum-
ni. An honorary gavel will be
presented to Seyrriour Raimi, for-
mer speaker.
Election of new Philomathic
officers will be held Sunday,
March 27.
The public is invited to attend
,he oratorical contest.
Junior Hadassah Has
Busy Program Sunday
Mrs. Joseph Ehrlich will speak
on the affiliation of Junior and
Senior Hadassah at the Jr. Ha-
dassah brunch and general meet-
ing , at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, March
20, at the Jewish Center.
Jean Jaslove, program chair-
man, announces that a Purim
theme will prevail at the meet-
ing. Members of Toledo Hadas-
sah will be guests. A portion
of the program will be, devoted
to Youth Aliyah.
That afternoon, Junior Hadas-
sah members will display their
culinary talents with a bake con-
test which will precede a tea
dance, also at the Center. Mem-
bers and their gentlemen friends
are invited.

Baruch and Larry Weintraub will
judge the contest.

a pledge dinner March 9 at the
Wardell-Sheraton.

Masada Membership
To See Israel Film
A new Israeli film "Planning
for Peace" will be featured at
the Masada meeting Thursday
evening, March 24, at Shaarey
Zedek, according to Sol J.
Schwartz, program chairman.
Dancing will follow the meet-
ing, which will be open to mem-
bers only. Nomination petitions
for the Masada board of direc-
tors will be available at this
meeting. The election will be
held in May.
Masada's fund-raising cam-
paign for the rebuilding of Kib-
butz Nitzanim, Masada's colony
in Israel, is now in its final
stages, according to Bill Fitzer-
man, chairman. All members who
have not yet made their pledge
are asked to call Fitzerman at
TY. 5-3754.
Young adults between 19 and
30 who like music are invited to
join the YOUNG ADULT CHOR-
AL GROUP at the Jewish Com-
munity Center, being directed by
Dorothea Steinman. The group
meets every Tuesday at 8:30 p. m.
in the Young Adult Lounge of
the Center.

fair of the Bnai Brtih Young
Women's Council of Detroit and
Windsor, a spring dance to be
held Saturday night, March 26,
at the Northwest Synagogue, Cur-
tis and Santa Rosa.
Mickey Woolf and his orches-
tra will provide dance music.
Feature attraction of the eve-
ning will be the final judging
of the annual beauty-personality
contest conducted by Danny Ras-
kin, Jewish News columnist.
Prizes will be awarded to the
winners, plus a trophy and crown
for the queen, with celebrated
personalities of the city acting
as judges.

Auxiliary anonunces that tickets
have gone on sale and can be
purchased from members of the
Bnai Brith Young Women; the
BBYO office on Dexter; both

Joyce Seedberg; president of
the Young Women's Council,
states that proceeds from the
dance will be allocated to the
various philanthropies supported
by Bnai Brith throughout the
nation.

The Dominoes Club has taken
over sponsorship of the Young
Adult Lounge program at the
Jewish Community Center. Tech-
nical improvements and redecora-
tion of the Lounge are planned,
as well as a new activities 'pro-
gram, according to Phyllis Lip-
sitz, president.

Young Adults
The first social affair for all
young adults of the community
sponsored by the Young Adult
Council will take place Sunday
afternoon, March 27, at the Jew-
ish Center. Corinne Perlis is
chairman of the event, to which
young men and women who are
not already affiliated with any
youth group are particularly in-
vited.
Dancing to an eight-piece or-
chestra, refreshments and. a skit
on the Allied Jewish Campaign
are scheduled. It is expected that
Max Lerner, noted author and
lecturer who will be in Detroit
that afternoon, Will address the
gathering, Miss Perlis said.
Leonard Baruch, Young Adult
Council president, will discuss
briefly the Council and . the
structure of the young adult
community.
Plans also are well underway
for the Council's second annual
Model Seder, scheduled for Sun-
day evening, April 10. Helen
Karabenick is chairman, assisted

featured at Cafe Tel Aviv Sat-
urday night, March 19, at Bnai

Cafe Tel Aviv, which is being

The government of Israel will
be the topic for discussion by the
educational group of Chapter I

Upon their return from Kansas
City, Mo., last week-end, Mrs.
Philip Fealk and Mrs. Sam Rosen-
berg of the Mizrachi Women's
Council announced the inaugura-
tion of a drive for 50,000 trees in
honor of President Harry Tru-
man at the midwest regional con-
ference of the Mizrachi Women's
Organization of America.
Kansas City, the president's
home town, pledged 5,000 trees,
with Eddie Jacobson, personal
friend of the president, partici-
pating. The conference also has
launched a
"member-bring-a-
member" campaign.
