Israel-Bound 'Vessel
Towed Toward Crete

ATHENS (JTA)-The Greek
Admiralty announced that the
S.S. Stampa, a Panamanian ves-
sel en route to Israel with 500
Jewish refugee passengers which
lost its rudder and signalled 'for
aid, is being towed towards Crete
by a Dutch salvage ship, the S.S.
Uruguay.
Earlier, two vessels attempted
to reach the distressed vessel but
were prevented from doing so
because of rough seas. The Dutch

rescue vessel put out from Alex-
andria reach the Israel-bound
Stampa.
The Greek Government issued
an order strictly - prohibiting the
landing on Gi.eek soil of any of
the passengers on the SS Tampa.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry
has asked the Jewish Agency
office in Athens 'to report to it
on the condition of the DP immi-
grants. The Foreign Ministry
said it would send a vessel. to
Crete to transport the Jews to
Israel'on the last lap of their
journey.
All the Jewish passengers
killed in -the crash in Greece of
a Czech plane which was carry-
ing them from Prague to Israel-
except the three -memberg of the
Kuperman family of Brazil-
were buried in Kalamata in the
Peloponessus where there is
neither a Jewish community nor
a Jewish cemetery.
