Jewish Selections in
'Best Stories of '48'
"The Best American Short
Stories of 1948," edited by Martha
Foley and published by Hough-
ton Mifflin Co. (2 Park St., Bos-
ton) is another landmark in
judging the best narrative
writing.
Thousands of short stories had
to be read to complete this selec-
tion. Included in the 28 stories
in this volume are the works of
Sidney Alexander ("Part oft the
Act") and Sidney Sulkin ("The
Plan").
In its totality, the volume by
Martha Foley continues the ex-
cellent tradition established for
this anthological selection of best
short stories by the late Edward
J. O'Brien.
This volume has the additional
merit of carrying, as in the past,
biographical data about the au-
thors whose stories were ad-
judged among the best; honor
rolls of American and foreign
authors among whom will be
found many familiar names as
well as those of new stars on the
horizon of narrative writing; a
list of distinctive volumes of short
stories published in the U. S.;
lists of outstanding short stories
in American magazines and the
addresses of American and Cana-
dian magazines publishing short
stories.
Stories which appeared in
Commentary Magazine, including
one by Isaak Babel whose latest
book was reviewed recently in
The Jewish News, and otherdis-
tinetive stories by Jews or ap-
pearing in Jewish periodicals are
among those listed in these
selections.
Bigot's Pamphlet Charges Jews
Control Atom Bomb Secrets
NEW YORK (JTA)-Jonathan
Ellsworth Perkins, one of the
leading anti-Semites in this coun-
try, is presently distributing a
six-page pamphlet entitled "The
Jews Have Got the Atom Bomb"
which alleges that Jews in this
country, led by Bernard Baruch
and David Lilienthal, have ob-
tained control of the secret of
the atom bomb in order to gain
power, it was reported by the
New York Post. The pamphlet,
mailed from Delavan, Wis., offers
for sale a number of pieces of
anti-Semitic propaganda, includ-
ing copies of the forged - Prow-
cols of the Elders of Zion."
