Ruth Schaffer of Columbus, 0., was elected first president
of the Midwest Regional Young Adult Council set up at the
regional conference of youth and young adult delegates held
here Nov. 13 and 14.
The more than 50 delegates present voted to sub-divide
the region into four geographic areas, with an area council to
be established in each of the
smaller sections, to facilitate pro-
gramming and service to local
communities.
The regional council .will fol-
low the pattern set by the Na-
tional Jewish Youth Conference
in asking the Jewish Welfare
Board to serve as sponsoring
agency.
Miss Schaffer will be assisted
by Victor Karp of Cleveland,
first vice president; Margaret
Sander of Dayton, recording sec-
retary; Shirley Eisen of Granite
City, Ill., corresponding secre-
tary, and Jerry Hammerman of
Toledo, treasurer. In addition,
four vice presidents will be elect-
ed by the area councils.
The young adult conference
was held in conjunction with the
regional meeting of the Midwest
section of the Jewish Welfare
Board. The young people's major
business session was held Sun-
day morning at the Jewish Cent-
er, when Leonard Baruch, presi-
dent of the Detroit Jewish Young
Adult Council, which was host
'to the delegates, presented the
recommendations of the perman-
ent planning committee. Ruben
Bennett, midwest JWB field sec-
retary, served as advisor to the
session.
Selig Rubinrott of Brooklyn, a
member of the national executive
committee of the National Jewish
Conference, brought greetings
from the nationwide youth body
and discussed some of the func-
tions of youth councils from the
national and local standpoint.
