Philomathic Alumni
To Help Celebrate
50th Anniversary

Philomathic Debating Club has
announced plans for its golden
jubilee celebration.
A banquet for Philomathic's
alumni and members will be held
Feb. 22, according to Jack Driker,
who estimated that there are ap-
proximately 1,000 Philomathic
alumni, with about 750 now liv-
ing in Detroit.
Other events to be held in con-
junction with the 50th anniver-
sary celebration, Driker said, are
the annual oratorical contest and
annual model meeting, a Sunday
brunch-smoker and a theater
party.
Philomgthic was founded in
1898 by a group of young Jewish
men, 14 to 21, who were dissat-
isfied with the forensic oppor-
tunities offered by Detroit's old
Central High School. The soci-
ety's goals today are essentially
the same • as they were 50 years
ago: experience in public speak-
ing, discussion of leading topics
of the day and practice with par-
liamentary rules of order.
Chairman of the jubilee ar-
rangements committe is Morton
Zieve, 2285 Longfellow. Alumni
wishing to participate in the cele-
bration are asked to contact him.
