Mrs. Epstein Sounds Hopeful

Zionist Women's President Tells 700 Detroiters Attending
Opening of '47 Honor Roll Drive That Herzl's
Vision Is Coming True
-
Assurances by local leaders.that
Detroit's obligations to Palestine
will be met in full measure, and
an expression of confidence by
Hadassah's national president
that hopes for the establishment
of Jewish statehood will be real-
ized, marked the impressive din
ner Saturday night, at the Book
Cadillac Hotel, which marked the
opening of the 1947 Honor Roll
drive of Detroit Hadassah.
Mrs. Harry L. Jones, Detroit
Hadassah president, in her open-
ing remarks to the 700 men and
women who contributed $100 per
couple to attend this event, said
she was certain that the $100,000
quota for 1947 will be raised dur-
ing the coming weeks.
Mrs. Moses Epstein, national
Hadassah president, the princi-
pal speaker at the dinner, after
an interesting resume of Jewish
achievements in Palestine during
the 50 years since the founding
of the modern political Zionist
movement, outlined the Jewish
Position before the UN and de-
clared:
"While there are many obsta-
cles in the UNSCOP recommen-
dations, the most important thing
about it is the recognition of
Jewry's right to statehood by a
committee acting for the nations
of the World. It is the realization
of the vision of Herzl exactly 50
years ago."
Obstacles in Path
Mrs. Epstein pointed out that
the achievement of the hopes
contained in the UNSCOP report
will require a two-third vote by
the UN Assembly and will entail
much debate. She declared her-
self hopeful, however, that the
United States position will be
favorable to the Jews. She point-
ed to Marshall's statement as an
important straw in the wind. She
described the American record in
support of a Jewish Palestine as
encouraging and traditional and
as recognition of the great val-
ues that must accrue to the world
from the establishment of a pro-
gressive Jewish center in the
Middle East.
Hope was expressed by Mrs.
Epstein that those who stand for
decency in England will support
the Jewish position, but she em-
phasized that "in the last anal-
ysis the power that counts the
most in this issue is the Jewish
people. The outposts we have
built have assured the recogni-
tion of our position in western
Galilee and the Negev in the
UNSCOP recommendations."
American Jewry's Role
Posing the question "will
American Jewry stand by?", Mrs.
Epstein expressed 'confidence that
"there is no question about it."
"I am confident," she said, "that
American Jews will 'meet that
responsibility not only to help
those who need Palestine but also
for ourselves. I am confident that
