For Citizenship by Dec. 31
NEW YORK — Aliens who
served in the armed forces of the
U. S. during World War II have
less than two months to qualify
for immediate citizenship under
the Second War Powers Act of
1942 according to Emil N. Baar,
chairman of the National Jewish
Welfare Board Veterans Service
Committee, who called attention
to a release of the Veterans Ad-
ministration warning that the
law would expire Dec. 31.
The act affects all aliens who
enlisted or were inducted into
the service before Dec. 28, 1945.
Approximately 100,000 sm-vice-

NEW YORK—The 1947 General
Assembly of the Council of Jew-
ish Federations and Welfare
Funds will be held from Jan. 31
to Feb. 3 at Ambassador Hotel,
Atlantic City, Stanley C. Myers,
Council president, announced.
Among the subjects under con-
sideration are the basic prob-
lems, purposes and structure of
Jewish community organization;
a comprehensive analysis of Jew-
ish needs and programs in Eu-
rope and Palestine; fund-raising
and budgeting for 1947 local, na-
tional and overseas needs, bath
current and capital; major trends
in Jewish cultural life; commun-
it - relations and civic-protective
activities, national and local; pro-
posals for establishing colleges,
universities a n d professional
schools under Jewish austSices,
and current trends in Jewish so-
cial services, including programs
for the aged, youth, children, the
needy and the chronically ill.
The Council of Jewish Federa-
tions and Welfare Funds is a co-
operative association of 266 fed-
erations, welfare funds and com-
munity councils in 236 cities
which account for over 90 percent
of the Jewish population of the
U. S. and Canada.
